ive got an 87 w/5 spd trans lost fifth gear it also runs real rich on initial starts. Is it worth while replacing the gear or just buying a new trans.

Your better off getting another transmission. Or if your familiar with this taransmission ( i am) you can open the gear case, check the gear itself, you need to remove the gear tower for 5th gear. Might be a good ida to check for play and syncros. If syncros are bad..well just get a new tranny. OPEN IT ONLY if you are familiar with this transmission. Its quite complicated, took me a while just to be familiar with it, and its still puzzles me heh. I should have gotten a new tranny hehe. If you open it you will need new gaskets...

Rebuilding your tranny will probably cost anywhere from $1500-2500. Your best bet is to find a cheap used tranny. The tranny's are the same from 85-01 with some differences here and there. The best idea is to find a tranny between 85-91 model years. They are pretty much a direct bolt on, but you will still probably need to swap parts from your old tranny. Basically, you can find the tranny for between 200-400 dollars, and labor is about 300-600 dollars (basically it's a clutch job, but they swap out the tranny while they are at it). As for the richness, have you check the ECU for any codes? That might help you pin point the cause of that problem.
