I messed up my car

Help:

I cleaned the trottle on my 2000 max VQ20DE engine using carb cleaner. When I put everything back together the engine would repeatedly race to 2k then drop to 1.5k over and over again. There is proper accelleration but I do not need to use the accellerator to drive within the city, the idle speed is so fast.

What could I have messed up?

Its your MAF sensor, if you're lucky, mabe you can carefully clean it off, but if not, it will need to be replaced.

Not being able to go past 2k RPM is one of the symptoms of a blown MAF. Besides, I between a fragile MAF and butterfly, I'd say there is much more of a chance that his MAF sensor is the problem.

You're not supposed to use carb cleaners on our cars. The appropriate cleaner would be air intake and manifold cleaner that is not caustic to the intake. Carb cleaner is for cars with carbs and it may have eaten away at the lining of your TB or maybe messed up a sensor.

Do you have any codes?

also unplug the mafs wire clip from the MAFS itself, make sure they are making good contact, and that the wires going to the pulg are all intact and not cut/damaged. this has happened to me before.

I highly doubt it would be the butterfly, puting much more trust that it is the mafs. good luck.

does your maxima have a carb? then why would you use carb cleaner. Like ABDomega said, carb cleaner can eat away at certain components of FI (fuel injected) engines...seals, sensors, etc....

I'm holding a bottle of Gumout Carb/Choke cleaner (that I use on my lawn mower) and the back of the can specifically says "not recommended for fuel injected vehicles"

I use CRC or Gumout Air-Intake and throttle body cleaner.

lesson to all: always read the can carefully before spraying any **** on/in your car!

reminds me of my Honda, which took a special power-steering fluid (made for all hondas) because regular power steering fluid that ALL other cars use will eat away at the valves in the PS system. I learned the hard way about this after having to replace my steering rack.....now I always read the can and shop manual for fluids/cleaners...

Emissions. More than half of this world has restrictions on engines over 2.2 liters. Israel just started to introduce cars with 3 liter engines and some countries don't allow anything more than 1.7 liters for example.

I messed up my car

Thanks for all the responses. I was able to eventually find the problem. I bought the car doing 37K kilometers. Apparently the last person to attend to it simply turned up the trottle stop screw instead of cleaning the trottle.

After I got rid of all the gunk in the trottle I needed to turn the stop screw back.

Thanks again, this is a great forum.

i agree with abd, you made a big booboo. check if you tb is still smooth on the inside. push the butterfly plate and run your finger on the inside of the tb. for future notice your supposed to use intake manifold cleaner. Good luck

a big reason why alot of foreign cars are so big on turbo....just look at Audi and VW using the 1.8T because it gives power but still is good for emissions because it's ONLY 1.8 l......go to Italy and everything's a turbo it seems, and all the engines are 1.5-1.8 liters...Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Seat, etc....

Audi 1.8L turbos suck... K03 Turbo by KKK will go out on ya at around 50K miles no matter how well U maintain the car. The engine is pretty much maxed out with built bottom end and all the tricks at 350WHP. My G20 has stock internals good for 450WHP. Nissan don't build motors like they used to. Back in the day they had kick *** motors like CA18DETs, FJ20, RB20DET, SR20DET, or even a 320HP SR20VET. Now all we got is VQ this VQ that... not that its a bad motor but I'm getting sick of seeing mini vans with what used to be a Maxima exclussive motor.

EDIT- I used to own a 00 S4 with all the bolt ons before my Maxima, and I'm a certified Audi Technician with years of experience on german crap.

Engine Shake after changing MAF

my maxina 2001, MAF fail so just changed a new one.
But the engine always try the lower idle speed, it get 750 rpm first, and then try to 600 and even 550. So, the car is shaked and then return a bit high.

I have no equipement to measure it. I've runned about 100 KM, but it is still same.

Can someone help to tell how to let ECM remember the proper idle speed?

I have to agree. I sold VW for 2 years and those 1.8 liter cars suck. I've dealt with a lot of used Audis as well and have never been impressed with one. Good luck on even making it to the timing belt change before the plastic water pump fails.

They're over enginered with overly complex and fragile electronics. All without much benefit.

Audis are not kickass aside from an RS4 and that's only cause it has a V8. My 2000 VQ30DE-K Max w/4-speed auto and 2-12" subs in the trunk ran a .83 seconds faster in the quarter-mile than my buddys 2003 1.8T Passat (VW but same power as Audi) w/5-speed manual
