one of those really bad things
one of those really bad things
alright well these things always happen once i have saved up enough money to buy something i want and then its just breaks just to **** me off.
the other day i was comming home from work, everything was normal with my car back up pull out of the parking lot, screech the tires on the cement because all the weights on the back tires come over the intersection and hesitate (air regulator is being funny) and then i hear ....rattle rattle rat....then its quiet....no power steering no vroom when i step on the gas so i wrench the steering wheel over and cross 3 lanes into the nearest driveway...luckily there wasnt any traffic and i have just enough momentum to get out of the street.
so i put the brake on and try to start the car only once knowing if it doesent start something really bad has gone wrong...doesent start it alwasys starts....call up pop he comes over we push it into a parking spot and we get a tow truck.. tow truck comes and takes it to my uncles shop..
today we go to see my uncle we take the front valve cover off after we confirm my timing belt has broken and/or watter pump has stopped cant turn the cam so we try the compression test....all 3 front cylindars have 100% compression loss which means at least 3 intake valves are bent.
so the $500+ i have saved up to just have fun with is once again going to something i have to have fixed and i once again cant spend my money on something i want i am always buying **** to fix xomething or loaning money to my parents so they dont kick me out for one time in my ****ing life i want to spend my own god damned money on things i want...
this ****es me off so god damned much
any thoughts on how much this repair is going to cost?
i already know the cost i am just wondering if you guys can guess it.

Sounds like 500$ worth of work. Isn't it funny how things like that always seem to happen, over and over again.
I feel your pain man. Spent about 1grand and 1year trying to get my car back to tip top shape. Now I may have a bad cat, I know that the 02 sensor I bought is wrong for the car so I gotta get one of those.
I wish I could buy a break!
Stay strong man, it can only get better.

umm well estimated cost is ~$1200 including labor, thats to replace all the valves (springs rocker arms and everything else is ok), valve gaskets new timing belt, retimed in and a new waterpump because the water pump just abruptly stopped which caused the already old belt to snap...
that does not inculde taking the cylinder heads to the machine shop to have them redone...
how ever it may be cheaper to buy new cylinder heads at $356 a pop with new everything except cam and then install it and my uncle didnt factor in the parts at cost because i am a relative....get discounts being a relative...i'll find out the final amount tommorow

i'm still pondering....i found these though:
http://rpmrons.com/NissanHds.html#3.0
and i'll be able to keep the old heads too...the rocker arms, springs and everything else is ok, the only thing we arent sure about is the valve seats but i can always rebulid the orpginal and pop in stiffer springs and better ground cams...and well, it sounds cheaper when i am buying new heads anyway and i can bolt tuned ones on when i am done with them and have an extra set kinda...

hmmm interesting, have you confirmed the valves are actually bent? How fast was the motor going when the belt broke? It could be that your valves are have one slightly open, but not actually bent. I guess the only way to know is to pop the heads off though.

Another thing...after loking at that price list, you may want to find out if those heads are complete and the $354 cost per head...the way ot's worded, I would assume they are bare head castings...no cams, valves, springs, or anything...
But then, even the complete heads at $90 are cheaper than having those heads worked...but the usualy cost, at $1200, includes the R/R labor, nw gaskets, timing belt, etc...this is just the heads, even complete...after you add everything else on, it may still be cheaper to have them done...

heres an update, the cost went up but will be no more than $2000...so its a toss up of buying a new car or fixing this one, nothing else is wrong with the car except some minor things so its getting fixed...
i need some head gaskets, Racing or Heavyduty gaskets woud be preferd if any one can point me to some that'd be great

u know.. instead of spending all that mollah for new heads and what not, it may be more cost and time effective to replace the long block and start fresh from there.. and in the mean time maybe saving up to build up the blown block with the goodies (asuming it's still sound)..and then swap over again..
the only thing i cant find are headers and crank...i'd like a crank thats not going to fly apart on me while i am pushin it hard....but the engine is pretty fresh as it is it only smoked a puff from old valve guides and there was no milkshake of doom so its best to replace the heads by them selves and then find a motor later...
the cylinder heads and the tuning are long term i'd have to save up for quite some time to do them unless i had a better job...any way i'll post another reply later this is becomming time consuming and i was going to go down to see if they had started yet

thats my engine, sorry the camera doesent take pictures well at night...but you get an idea of whats going on, its clean, really clean, amazingly clean for 163,000 miles my uncle said the guy working on it was happy it wasnt so damn dirty as all the other cars....
the timing belt didnt snap, the timing belt it self is decaying, i see very faint printings of the nissan logo on it and i can pull the teeth off with my finers, how ever while i was driving the timing pully riped one tooth off and then since there was a sudden movement a bunch of other teeth just got sheered off by the pully...i'll get a pic of it tommorow i brought the belt home
the cylinder heads are more than reuseable, no major damage they dont even need to be re surfaced, valve guides keepers and everything are still factory frech for being old is kind of supprising....
basicly its getting a valve job, only 6 valves were bent 4 intake and 2 exhaust, i'll get those too..
theres very little bulid up in my intake manifold but its getting a cleaning out any way
soo far so good....i need to get engine bulid date though, aparently there were alot of revised parts half way through 1987...of course

Brings back memories reading about your engine problem. My car did just about the same thing...oil from a leaking cam seal did my timing belt in. Like yours didnt break the belt but the teeths was torn off. Was getting ready to get on the freeway when it happened....knew right away what had happened. It was 30k miles over-due for a t-belt replacement.
You never know till you take the heads off and see the damage done. Like your engine, pretty clean, some bend exhaust valves, intake valves looked good. But since the heads are off makes good sense to replace them all.
These are really good engines.
Did the repair for under $250 in parts, your own labor is priceless as you know. Hope you dont spend $2000 on these repairs. These cars are only going for under 2k no matter where you live.
So $2000 + 2000 = $2000

I paid $1550 for what you are geting. To get new heads and belts and even an ecu from the junkyard and some other things. They even took my brand new distributor cap I installed not too long before that. They said when the timing belt broke it gave a spike of electricity to the ecu. Which I knew was bull. But after all the hassle I went with through them I was just wanting my car back. I already a year later had to replace the timing belt again. Did that this past December. I, for a while, had to retune my car because the people that did the topend rebuild did a crappy job. Hoses weren't connected right, and my cruise control for some reason never worked after I paid that 1550. It made me mad, I think they connected some wires up wrong and did the crap up themselves but I had no proof unfortunately. Is what I am trying to say is, be careful. Make sure they are very reputable and are good, very good. Just because they say they can do it, doesnt mean they are going to do it right. I probably couldve taken it to Nissan and been charged right around that much and gotten better service. Oh and my heat sheilds to the crossover pipe on the driver side, they forgot to install those as well. I tell ya be careful. Get more estimates.
if something goes wrong i can go down and ask them to fix it, my uncles the senior mechanic and has worked there since he got out of high school and hes ~50 years old now...i told him i didnt want some screw job that doesent know jack working on it and i know whos good down there any way....i'm keeping my cylinder heads, they didnt sustain much damage, valve guides and everything are still in good condition so theyre going to give it a once over for imperfections and they'll be back, i get parts at cost but thwen they pulled everything they found that the exhaust manifold had a crack in it, and it did, my own uncle isnt going to BS me and know i know better so i got the old manifold and sure enough, never notived it because of that heat shield though
