Looking at a SC this weekend HELP!

I'm looking at a supercharger kit this weekend (v2) with 45,000 miles on it and it's never been rebuilt. Oil every 3k and it comes with a blowoff valve, 3 gauges (boost and 2 others) and he said everything's working fine and all is included. What should I be looking for as far as problems with this kit or obvious places to look for damage/wear.

Basically what questions would you ask this guy.

Thanks a millions!

Man I thought a rebuild was something like $300 - also how many is too many miles? And an FMU, what would I be looking at to pick up a good one?

Thanks for the help guys, anything else I should know?

The best way to determine the health of a blower is to listen to it while it is running. Unfortunately that is usually not an option since most sellers have the kit already removed from their vehicle.

Check for axial play in the impeller. There should be none, nada, zilch. The bearings should feel absolutely smooth as you turn the impeller. There will be a little rotational play in the impeller when you rotate it back and forth due to clearance at the spur gears. I know that is the case for the V1 with the straight cut gears. With the helical gears in the V2 there should be very minimal play, but I haven't ever had a V2 to play with so I don't know what is normal.

Check for signs of oil leaks around the drive shaft and at the joint between the two housing halves. A little oil is probably okay, but it shouldn't be filthy.

Check for signs of oil inside the scroll or pressure piping, which would indicate oil leaking past the inner shaft seal. You don't want to see any at all.

A kit with 45,000 miles on it should be in very good condition if the former owner was religious about oil changes, and especially if he wasn't overdriving the impeller with a small pulley.

What is "standard" rebuild mileage? Or is there one?

I asked the Vortech rep about that and he said it depends too much on maintenance and how much it was used and what size pulley to be able to give a definitive answer.

He did say that it should last 100,000 miles or more if taken care of properly. Mine has about that much and it has no problems.

Aside from the obvious condition of the SC unit itself... the HARDEST part of getting a used kit is making sure it is COMPLETE (bolts, etcs).

A complete rebuild (bearings and seals) is $300...
