Should I replace my radiator with 122K on the car or just take it out and have it rodded? Rod out is $75 and New is $160, non factory, they say to get a non factory one because it will be better, any thoughts??? thanks

I'd get the new one all the way. Nothing replaces a new one, it'll last much longer. 160 sounds reasonable.

I ended up paying 150 out the door for a steel unit with a lifetime warranty. Rodding out is when they disassemble the top tank, put rods into the radiator to clean the inside of it, the guy at the shop told me that my radiator was about 80% blocked and recommended me to replace it so I did, so far so good, stays nice and cool with ac on.

You cannot rod our radiators, the top and bottom our made of plastic and cannot be removed and put back in place like old aluminum or copper radiators.

Just replace it if it's worn out. Shop around, you can pick a new one up for about $120 bucks.

Man, I swear I replied to this last night.

To those that asked I got it at a local place that specializes in Radiators. Yes, it was OEM fit.

TNMAX98SE, the guy with the white i30 that was SC'ed and Powercooled had a nice polished unit(top was aluminum and polished to the bling factor of 9) custom made for him by Griffin. I'm sure Griffin kept the measurements and plans and could probably make one again for a more modest fee.

nissanguy8, I guarantee you that your radiator isn't steel.

Okay so they can be rodded out but I don't see the point. Having a new top and bottom put on would be over half the price of a new one and then your always gonna have issues with it afterward. Putting on those plastic pieces would require to have them re-crimped on. Aluminum doesn't bend for ****. It only snaps and then sits there and looks at you. If this company can get it not to snap it certainly drastically reduces its overall strength.

maximus pr, good luck with your soon to be leaky radiator.

Of course its metal. Its called Aluminum. That would be one of the best mods out there, "Super heavy, super incapable of cooling steel radiator."

did the same to my older protege 3 years ago by very same guy similar radiator desing and not leaking as to date only replaced the cap 1 year ago

of course **** happens but for my it was a very cheap compared to 400+ for an oem , i waited 1 week for the shop to find a replacement(not oem) unit in puerto rico without luck
ordering by mail was a $250 option with a 1-2 weeks delay or $35+ more for 2nd day, so for just $90 if can remember new top, radiator cleaned and new top hose plus a 1 year warranty can't be that bad - saving for my sylvia project

I obviously do know more than you... on this particular subject. I obviously didn't turn up the sarcasm indicator enough. Maybe you should work on your grammar and spelling as well as your knowledge of all things automotive.

Funny, the typical internet forum storyline. Guy makes blatantly wrong statement; other guy corrects him; original guy gets mad and makes unintelligent personal attacks; second guy has nothing to say because he has already made his point.

Actually, most of the people on the org are very cool and nice to talk to. They leave informative posts, never being smart asses or making lame assumptions about anyone. Then there is YOU.

Coming on here and saying guaranteeing that my radiator is not "steel", telling another member that his newly fixed radiator will eventually fail, or telling me I need to work on my grammer because I spelled guarantee wrong.

Why don't you spend your time being more positive on here instead of being a smart *** and making little smart *** comments??? I guess you spend a lot of time on the internet?? Are you the wrong statement police?? Is that how you got all those posts? Browsing the forums in search of who to correct next??

I wish you lived near me so you can make smart *** remarks to my face. Its easy to talk smack behind a computer and keyboard. Even guys like YOU can do it. Go post some more kid!

no other problems ... there is lot of construction goin on in this area and i guess someday some rock hit the radiator underneath ... i can't describe the leak ... it's not at all sticky to call it oil but it's not water either ... anyways, i think i've to goto some radiator specialist to get the job done ... i don't think it's a diy anymore! thanks for the reply though!

The one I got for my grand cherokee was exactly like the OEM that it replaced. Seemed to be a bit more solid. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, especially with the lifetime warranty.

if your getting a leak, first find out what it is, coolant reeks pretty bad and ive seen it come in orange red and green colors. once you determine what the fluid is find out where the leak is at. turn your car on and let it get up to operating temperature, when it gets there and needs cooling your thermostat will open up and flow coolant. follow the main hoses from the radiator to the thermostat(pasanger side, side of engine block) also check the large hose that runs from the bottom of the radiator to the block. check the small lines(2) that run from the radiator bottom to the tranny(?). If the leak is from your radiator(most likely) then it is very simple to replace yourself with a friends extra hands.

every aftermarket radiator i have ever seen appeared to be better built than oem(what a surprise) and also came with a lifetime warranty.

i remember a time not to long ago when this site was so refined and polished and everyone seemed to get along, we were the classy forum unlike hondatech and honda acura.net and their ilk. differences in opinion are fine but bickering on the internet is like (excuse my crude analogy) winning the special olympics....

good luck

Fithere, several things. First, check the basics. Make sure your hoses are securely attached. Then make sure the drain plug on the unit is tight. From you profile or homepage I can't tell if the Std. means standard tranny. If it does then this isn't an issue but if you are auto make sure that the tranny cooler lines to the botom of the radiator are securely fastened as well.

If you have a coolant leak you will smell it. Go for a drive and push it pretty hard. Get it nice and hot. When your done park in an area protected from much air movement like a garage. Sit there for a bit as it cools off. If you have a coolant leak you will smell a sweet sugary smell. If you don't you probably don't have a coolant leak. The way you describe the liquid sounds much more like ATF than engine coolant.

If you did put a rock in the bottom of your radiator this is still a DYI'er job. I replaced my radiator is less that 30 minutes. Two bolts and its free. Disconnect the two plugs for the fans. Disconnect 3 or 5 hoses(depending 5Spd or auto) then pull out the old unit. Place the old and new next to each other. Transfer over the fan assembly. Put the new one back it. Fill it up and drive away.
