oil pressure sending unit leaking...need help

Yesterday, i went to get my oil changed. When they were done, the guy told me that my oil pressure sending unit is starting to leak. He told me to go buy one and save it until my next change is due. He said he would put it in while doing my next oil change. My question to my fellow members is, should I worry about this? Would it be harmful/dangerous to wait another 3000 miles until my next oil change to replace it? Thanks!

In my experience, those things leak slowly. Just check your oil often to see if the level drops significantly. If it does, then go get it replaced soon. But it will probably be okay.

I went to pep boys ( where i work ) and bought me a bottle of Bars that stops oil leaks....after one oil change all my leaks were sealed, my oil sending unit, and the seal on my pully. Im even running synthedic now.

Good luck

Id be weary of that stuff. There are tiny passages for oil to travel throughout the motor. How does it keep from sealing those off too?

How's the synthedic working for you?

Id be carful before u buy a new sending unit Mrseed, usly its not the part that goes bad. Its the seal.

Mad max i love it, i switch to moble 1 for about 6 mounths no and no problems. Next oil change im going to try Royal purple. but the moble is good stuff it handels all the nitrous i throw it, and keep the motor cool with the help of some othere secrets

Got mine from AutoZone when mine was leaking. Real easy to replace and only lost a little bit of oil. Couldn't get it off with a wrench so I had to buy the socket for it (I think it was 1")

You "shouldn't" have any problems out of it...as long as the oil isn't pouring out. It's probably just barely seeping and he seen the wet spot. We've replaced these that have been leaking for years, with no other problems than an annoying drip from it.

That thing is like five bucks and takes five minutes to change, its not a big deal. I think the socket I needed to get mine off was 1 and 1/16 inches but to get the new one on was significantly smaller. Don't forget that oil comes out when you take it off....haha we wouldnt want you to get a face full of black stuff.

how often does this sending unit go bad. a couple times i was low on oil when i was changin my oil but i dont think i have a leak. but at times it was only a quart low and only when i do hard driving. but since then i started using thicker oil and havnt had any problem. i though i was just burning the oil quickly. is this sendin unit something i should check.

I would urge anyone to either buy a new one or reseal the one one. Putting "stop leak" products in the engine is a bad idea.

Well as you probly know, synthetic is thinner than non-syn. I've also got a tiny leak from there too. But I use mobil 1 full syn 10w-30. So, your leak may be a tad bigger than mine.

I agree, if you can avoid stop leak...do so. If you have seen some of the engines I have torn apart, you wouldn't ever want stop leak near your car.

My oil sending unit went out a few months ago. I never lost oil, and in a span of twenty minutes, I had lost two quarts. It went from no leak to a bad leak in a span of minutes. I am glad I was in town. My situation was rare, but possible for any other maxima. If you are on the interstate and this happens, you could run out of oil and your light may come on when it's too late. If the sending unit is leaking, change it asap. As others have mentioned, it is cheap and easy. If you don't want to change it, have someone else do it for you. Is the possibility of losing your engine worth waiting?
