How do you get rid of used engine oil? If you bring it to a shop, do they charge you some kind of hazmat disposal fee? The closest place to my house wants $5 to take it off my hands. Is this cheap, expensive, what?

In NYS, ALL businesses that fill cars with oil, must BY LAW also accept used oil. If you have a JiffyLube or AutoZone or another quick oil change place around you, go there.

The Amoco station near my house has a disposal container in back. It cost nothing to dispose of your oil there. I've never heard of a place charging a disposal fee, but then I've never checked anywhere else.

haha only joking, don't pour it in the woods. True in NYS, they have to take it. But this jerky Pep Boys ignored people, then made them sign a log and put down their name/addy/phone#. One time they deliberately ignored me so I just slammed 2 1 gal. containers on the service desk and walked away. The guy dropped what he was pretending to do and ran after me.

Well I think it's required to put down your name, address etc.. in Wa. state is the same here. But where I take mine, they just point to the big oil tank. It usually has the fill out sheet there and you just pour in the oil by yourself.

I sure hope you're not saying you dump the oil in a landfill. That is extremely illegal and you can go to kail for criminal negligence. Why? Because 1 gallon of a volatile organic compound can contaminate 1 million gallons of water. I'm in the business of cleaning up spills and releases.

South CA Kragen should take your used oil free of charge.
But one thing that still bothers me is the containers they won't take. Where do you properly dispose your used oil containers ? I know no matter what I do, there is still a small amount of oil in that 1 quart plastic bottle.

You buy a sturdy 5 gal(or whatever) plastic can and keep reusing it. No waste.

Sometimes if you bring you oil in other containers(ie.. antifreeze) they won't accept it. The antifreeze residue will contaminate the oil and ruin it for reprocessing

I used to bring mine back to AutoZone but now I bring it to Walmart at the service desk to avoid hassle of filling out name/address.
