CEL: intake?

Hey guys,
Today i put in a shortram air intake, when i put the shortram intake piping in today i also took the second hose that goes into the piping(towards the top of the engine bay) and put in a second breather(already had one on valve cover) and now i have a check engine light....before i had a stillen kit(maf and filter, stock piping) and i also had a K & N breather on the valve cover hole thingy, and i wasn't getting a CEL. I'd diagnoss it but the moron who had the car before me broke the **** off of the ecu so i cant do it myself....anyway my question is, do you guys think it is the intake piping, or breather, or both causing the light? and if so how do i fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Dude, whats happening is your engine is sucking unmetered air through the breather connected to the mid pipe. It's ok to have a breather on the valve cover, but you "cannot" have any way for the engine to receive air anywhere between the MAF & the throttle body. Just cap it & make sure it's air tight. Once you have done that reset your CEL & you should be fine. I've found that the little rubber cap's that come on some spark plugs work really good for just that. Or maybe a 2 liter soda pop cap might be tight enough. Just be imaginitive when finding a way to cap off the opening on the mid pipe & everything will work out. Good luck!!!!

You lost me man, what are you trying to explain?

The hose the usually would connect from the valve cover to the midpipe/stock resonator is for recirculation/smog. If you have a breather on the vavle cover where the hose normally would be thats ok. But where the other end of the hose would connect on the midpipe it's not ok for it to just suck air in. It needs to be blocked off so it cannot suck air through that opening. It is un metered air, meaning the computer is not adjusting for it / suppling additional fuel to mix with the additional air. The computer is reading the amount of air entering the engine based on what passes throught the MAF sensor. Any extra air not metered by the MAF is bad. I'd be willing to bet if you try to drive the car the vehicle will sometimes run good & sometimes might stall out for no apparent reason. Well no you know the reason... So cap off the opening on the midpipe & you'll be fine.

no the cel is probely caused by the air inatke temp sensor. it is on the bottom of your stock air intake downpipe right before your airfilter if you had the stock one of there. check that and see if that is causeng your problem.

also putting a second breather filter on the upper one is not a good thing. that air needs to be measured.

i tried that(capping the midpipe), and the car wont turn on.....thats why i was saying to put a hole in the intake piping....are we talking about the same so called "midpipe", with the stock intake this pipe goes into the intake behind the airbox.....

Unmetered air "will cause a CEL" I'd bet the farm on it.
I know alot of orgers that do not put the IAT probe back into the intake tract & do not get a CEL. But if the plug is diconnected from the IAT probe then you will get a CEL. Either way having a breather connected after the MAF is not good, that needs to be fixed A.S.A.P

Is driving around with the CEL untill i get it fixed a really bad idea? does having a cel retard the timing or anything like so that i should be scared of?

Thanks

Ok lets start all over again.
1st: What brand intake did you purchase ebay, stillen, frankencar etc?
2nd: is the factory resonator (big black swaure box looking piece) still installed on the vehicle or did you new intake come with a replacement mid pipe?
3rd: What part of the midpipe are you capping off? Hopefully not the largest opening where the air intake bolts on. you should only be capping off one of the I think 5/8" openings?

I'll try to find some pictures for you, but first I need to know what intake you bought.

Does your new mid pipe look similar to this one?

Or are you using the stock resonator like the one in this picture.

Still intake.....custom midpipe, no resonator, i think we are confusing "midpipes" .....there used to be a small pipe coming from the top of the motor all the way to the stock resonator, instead of puting it into my new intake pipe, i put a breather on it.....that is why i am saying i should drill a hole into the pipe, get a fitting and put that hose into the hole....

Ok see how the red hose is coming off of the mid pipe & connecting to the valve cover? That is the correct way to hook it up if your not using one of those little breathers.

If your using a breather on the valve cover then the tube coming off of the mid pipe where the red hose is connected needs to be cap off so no air can be suck in. Everything else in that picture is correct.

Like this. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/likwid...&.dnm=e370.jpg
See how basically the other outlet from the mid pipe is not being used in this picture? Compare it to the original Injen pic you posted for me.

dude, there are two hoses going in...one from the valve cover and one more up top(the second one i put a breather on), i put a breather on the hose up top......and its a custom intake pipe, so i havnt put in any holes yet. This whole thread is just one big ol' misunderstanding.

I understand whats going on. You seem to be at the disadvantage. I am only trying to help you out. If your intake doesn't ressemble the picture of the injen intake I modified for you then it's not right. I can not say it any clearer for you. "You do not want any breathers connected to the mid pipe or anything above the MAF sensor". "You do not want a breather on anything else except for the valve cover, do not put breathers on any of the equiptment close to the throttle body" The hose coming from the equiptment closest to the thottle body needs to be connected to the mid pipe. No breathers, no air leaks, nothing. Look at the picture I photochoped for you above. How much more can I help you out? I'm not frustrated at all, I'm simply trying to help you understand how your **** needs to be hooked up. Especially if you want your car to run correctly. Once again I repeat look at the picture I posted above....

Thats the best I can do for you, if that doesn't seem to help you understand how to cure the problem, then just take it to a mechanic because it's either one of 2 things something else is terribly wrong or you just can't comprehend how it should be. I'm not trying to diss or anything like that but this is not very complex work were talking about here. It's a friggin intake system...............

here I did the picture for you again so it is alittle clearer for you.
Notice the breather I drew on the valve cover.
Notice how theres only 1 area on the mid pipe for a hose to connect.
Notice how the hose that is connect to the midpipe is in "bright green" so you know it has to be connected. No breathers anywhere near that area.......
If you follow this picture your car will run perfect.

That is what i was saying to do in the first place, plug the smaller pipe into a hole i would make in the intake pipe.....once again just one big misunderstanding.....thanks a lot for the help though.
