I noticed that recently the idle rpm is about 1,500 when I first start in the morning. After about 5 min. it lower to about 6-7. Is it normal for a 97 gxe?

You asked if it's normal. I said yes. What is it that you don't understand? Think about it, when a car is first turned on the engine and everything is still cold and not at operating temperature. The car is running richer to warm up faster. Look at the temp needle, notice that it gets closer to the middle as the car warms up and the RPM also fall at idle.

 

Its normal.
