Problems when starting

Every so often when i start my max it starts then the rpms go to 1500 rpms then goes down to like 200 and if i dont give it some gas it stalls out. Do you know what I could do to fix this. I think i read that someone cleaned their TB and then it fixed that prob, but do u think if that doesnt work i might need new spark plugs. Also im having problems when my auto is shifting its alittle jerkey. If you know anything that could help please let me know.
Thanks

this is my new favorite answer to all questions, i just did it myself yesterday. yes clean the tb!

infact, if you look i just had a question about it when i did it to my brothers car because of your exact problem. my old car, which is now his, is a '94 eclipse which has always done what you describe. nearly die upon starting; after cleaning the tb (it has been like it has for years and years) the problem was instantly fixed.

it started better then it ever has, and idle'd like a pro with no power loss. however, we're trouble shooting the high rpm's it has at idle right now (dont worry, its because it was so messed up for so long the ecu has to adjust. you shouldnt have this problem, but if you do get a high idle you can drive around for a day or two to see if it adjusts, then you could reset the ecu or adjust the iacv (plastic screw next to tb that adjusts idle)

i dont think spark plugs would cause the idle to drop really low then be normal afterwards, but weak plugs could be a contributing factor.

get ngk coppers (napa has them listed as ngk v-power copper or something similar) for less then $2.00/ea.

the car comes stock with double tip platinum ngk's, they last 60k mi. a dealership will tell you that's all it can use, and on the forum its about 70% copper 30% plat i would say from reading plenty of posts about them, about what people use. the coppers only last 30k but at a fraction of the cost, and in my personal opinion i would rather use copper since it is a better conductive material then platinum. (maybe thats why the plats need two tips and run identical to the single tip coppers?)

might as well do that while you're at it, plugs = $12, tb cleaner = $2.50, so for under $15 and some elbow grease your engine should be running like a pro
