I purchased a new block heater and have no idea how to install it. I'm told that you have to remove one of the frost plugs. What is the best way to remove one of these? I'm told that you have to punch it out. Well if I do that wont the plug end uip in the block? Now that would suck *** if that happend. What would you guys sugest for taking one of the frost plugs out?

did the NEW block heater not come w/ instructions on installation?
it depends on what kind of heater you have. some dips into the oil..some goes on like a heating pad.

you won't get metal shavings in there if you knock it out correctly....but from what i see in your writing i would return that heater and get a different one that's easier to install.
that's actually pretty normal for these things.
there's a tool made to remove freeze plugs, but it's basically just a hook on the end of a hammer type thing. you can get them at most tool supply stores, and may be able to rent one at a parts store.
If not, then simply use a screwdriver and a hammer to punch through it, then pry it out of the block. not much to it. don't worry about it getting stuck inside the block- not going to happen. the coolant passages behind them aren't large enough for the plug to fall in.

Found this. The water heater unit seems nice as you get heat inside the car instantly.

there are some behind the timing belt, (around the water pump area), and another one or two on the back of the block.. I doubt you want to try to get to any of those.
same thing for the ones on the back of the block, simply because they're hard to get to.
soooo, your best bet is to get one on the side of the block (facing the front of the car), because they're easier to get to.
