airbag light came on

After leaving the sunroof of my 1995 SE open during a rainstorm, the airbag light came on and hasn't gone off. Is there a reason to be concerned about this? Does this mean that the airbags won't work or simply that the sensor got wet, and perhaps rusty?

is there a way to reset (turn off) the light to see if it comes on again?

Thanks.

You can try the airbag reset procedure. Put the car in the accessory position, press the drivers side door sensor (the rubber thingy that presses shut) 5-6 times. then start the car.....I think.

Open the driver's door. Note the rubber covered button located low on the B pillar, a button which is pressed by the door when the door is closed. This is the Driver's Door Switch (DDS).

Turn the ignition from OFF to ON. Press the DDS at least 5 times within 7 seconds after turning the ignition switch ON. Turn the ignition OFF. Close the driver's door. Start the engine.

If the airbag warning lamp is still on (or still flashing), there is a fault in the Supplemental Restraint System which must be diagnosed and repaired. This is a job for your local friendly Nissan dealer.

if the procedure to turn it off doesn’t work after a couple tries, get it serviced. that means something really is wrong with the air bags, and this isn’t the area to ignore a warning light. if the sensor is having a short, or value fault, the bags could not deploy during an accident, or deploy unecessarily.
