Autotragic finally died

Well my tranny finally went on monday morning when i was already late for school. I could start it and put it into anygear other than neutral and park and it would stall out. it took me messing around like 7 times before i could move it and drove to school, a 45 minute drive. and then back home again. in the afternoon. so i took to the shop and am getting it rebuilt. Anyways, i was curious on what i need to to do to keep it in better shape, like how often if at all to change the trans oil, do i need to make show drive it like grandma for a while. Thanks for all your help.

finally, anybody sell there car lately, just wondering what kinda $ i would be looking at, i want to get a 2002 soon, maybe, kinda, i love this car but i will be doing big time driving like 800+ miles down to college and 800+ back each time i come home and i dunno if i want to keep this or get a newer one

Not bad, probably a bit above average for these things.

Expect to pay 1500-2000 for a rebuild . For that you could buy another GXE. When mine crapped out, it started slipping a bit, and on the wy to school one morning it completely stopped moving, wouldnt even go in reverse. So I spent most of my free time for the next month doing a 5 speed swap.

make sure its not just the torque converter
i had it happen on a 92 gxe and a 90 stanza
the teeth stripped out on the converter side and it wouldnt engage in any gear(after shutting off i could hear something in the bellhousing still spinning for a second)
but maybe it could be different depending on how it broke
a few shops i talked to said it was pretty common and most people get got for a whole rebuild and new converter

when your on those trips you would not be doing any shifting because youd be in 5th on the hyway and the 5spd gets better gas milage so that makes no sense

176,000 on my first tranny....92SE

Got an auto rebuild for $1200, as i hate driving a stick in traffic.

Engine still runs great...no smoke...or oil leaks.
