93 GXE Timing Belt

I just inherited a 93 GXE from my father and I think he replaced the timing belt in 1998 at 48k, it now has 63k on it. Is there any way to inspect the timing belt to determine if it needs to be replaced without having to do a complete tear down. My dad's memory is not as good as it used to be and he can not remember for sure at what mileage or year it was changed and of course he did not keep the receipt. I even called the dealership and their records only go back 2 years.

Thanks in advance.

the timing belt is good for 60k, so if the car has less than 100k on it I wouldn't worry much

Hmm. Perhaps the best way to get good advice on this would be to find a Nissan guy in your area (not a dealership shop, but a word-of-mouth sort of recommendation), and ask him/her to look at it. It might cost $60-80 to figure out the answer, but either way it'll save you hundreds.

This is of course assuming all efforts to discover the history/non-history of that repair prove fruitless.

I don't own a VG (engine w/ the timing belt), but I suppose you could pull the timing cover off and visually inspect the belt? Not sure how long it takes to do that, though.
