Just bought a 1998 Max 5-speed with 152k on it.

Hey guys, I just bought my second max (my first, which I still own, is my 2000 Maxima SE - college mobile), a 1998 Maxima 5-Speed fully loaded, with beige leather, sunroof, bose audio, dual power and heated seats. I got the car for pretty much free, and it has 152k on it. I really love the car because its a manual transmission, unlike my 2000 Max auto, which isn't nearly as fun .

Now, just a few things I have to know. What should I look out for in the car, such as for repairs, and possible malfunctions? When I drove the car, it felt awesome, as if it was 52k miles instead of 152k, but you can never know... I just need to know some simple things with the vehicle.

I'm not too sure what to expect with the 4th gens... Is there anything the 1998 Max 5-speed notorious for?

it's known for it's random explosions.

In all honesty, I think the 98 is the best car you could have gotten, not really any probs with that year.

How is the clutch doing on that thing? Also check if there has been a recall on your alternator.

I've had a few postcards sent to me in the mail about the recall. Call the dealer and give them your vin since a hole bunch of 98's had recalls.

How did you get it for pretty much free? if you dont mind me asking.

I'd look same things you would on your 2000 as yourt 98, they have the same engine in there, except for the VI on the 2K.

check Struts/Shock, sparks, clean TB, check air in tires, check or change oil, tranny fluids, depending on when that clutch went in you may want to swap that one out.

I'd just do a basic tune up and check for codes, as well as alternator recall, and you should be fine.

Yes. Notorious for a tranny leak at the reverse switch, oil leak at the sender, side air bag modules, heated seat lamps, EVAP boost (pressure) sensor, fuel sending unit, fan blower squeal.

A diligent original owner would have addressed everything under warranty except EVAP and airbags.

I got the car for free, because my dad and I always buys cars from one particular dealer (20+ cars in the past 3 years, dad owns a transportation company). For me the dealer told me $4500 and no tax, but for my dad, behind closed doors, they have an agreement where the car was pretty much free of charge, i figure it's customer appreciation of some sort, since we are his best customers.

As for the recalls, I will inquire about it this week, probably Tuesday the earliest.

I just drove it a bit earlier today and it was nice, very very nice.

sweet deal dood. I'm at 150k now.

I got my car just under 100k... i've change knock sensor, clutch (act), CPS (caused car to shut down while driving, and hard starts... scary), starter, alternator (recall), cv boots, Radiator/thermostat

maintenance stuff, i changed air filter to JWT, fuel filter, sparks, struts/springs (struts were dead), tires/rims, o2 sensors (for the hell of it... nothing wrong w/the originals). Nothing terribly wrong with the car... Should last quite a few more years.

Our vendors buy us free lunches, golf polo shirts, rounds of golf, holiday dinners, sports tix, but never any cars.

It's amazing to me for how little businesses are willing to evade sales tax ($4500). Ever go to a restaurant and have the proprietor offer to not charge sales tax if you pay cash? That's so silly, he saves 40% and you save 8.25% while breaking the law.
