Fair Price for 97 SE 5spd

Hey guys
Here is the car,
I've been negotionating for this car for the last week. Can't agree on price. I don't want to pay more that its worth b/c if it gets totaled i don't want to be in the hole

97 white SE 5spd
104k
bose
tan cloth
new tires
everything is very clean and good. little door ding on drivers fender (paint is good). NO records but carfax is clean.
No wrecks. Hood was replaced.

guy wanted 7k
looked at KBB & tmv and its worth about 5500. I offered 6100 b/c it is in pretty good condition.
After a week and half i called him again to see if he was interested. He told me 6500. THATS A 1G over what these cars are going for according to edmunds TMV. What do yall think?

Gene

Its not a Bad price, but shop around, and see if you can get the same thing for cheaper.

Hey, I'm up here in Mass, and just looked that car up for you in the NADA book. That car in the NADA, is $5,500., low retail, $6,925., Avg retail, and $7,925, High retail. Does it have a sunroof? If it's in nice shape, between $6k and $7k is a fair price. Low retail, the car being in bad shape, Avg retail, car being in average condition, noticable wear and tear, and High retail, it being in real nice condition, looking and mechanically. So the way you're describing it, between 6-7 is more than fair, but shop around, you may find a better one, they're out there. I bought a 99 SE 5 speed, loaded to the hilt, leather, heated seats, bose, climate control, 1 owner and ALL records with 98k on it for $9,200. Good luck man.

yea the problem with the TMV is that it is really low compared to what the retail price is. so i think 6500 for a clean car is an ok deal, also lets say you have the car for over a year, and you DO somehow pay TMV, the TMV in a year will be much lower than what you paid now, and will still not get as much as you paid for if you total the max...get it?

sounds like a decent deal. Did you tell the guy what u found as far as edmunds/bluebook prices? I got my 97 SE with 65k miles for $7k. I recommend askin the guy about teh differential bearings and such. I know its a common problem wit 95-97's. They usually go between 60-75k miles...it just happened to me, but it doesnt happen to all of them. Its kinda hit or miss. but overall, sounds like a good deal

I'll answer for him since he's out.

we did all the price research, and the car is worth no where near that much around here. I paid 9k total with tax at the dealer for my 98 gxe with 50k miles 3 YEARS AGO! 7k is rediculous for that car.

He refuses to pay higher than 6,200, but is only willing to give that because the are NO OTHER comparable maximas around, nor have there been in a while. I guess it will all come down to how badly the owner wants to sell the car, or how badly

Don't shoot yourself in the foot over this. If you don't think it's worth it, and the seller refuses to come down on the price, look elsewhere for a Max. There's plenty out there - I don't buy the notion that there's no comparable Maximas around. There's so many .Org members from GA... unless they've bought them all, you guys aren't looking in the right places.

Maybe lay off the guy for a week or two, then call him back and see if he still has it. Maybe he just needs some more people to tell him he wants too much for the car, then perhaps he'll come down on the price. If he wants a grand more than its worth, he'll have trouble selling it to anyone (unless he finds a sucker). But don't give in to the dude just because he wants to be the stiff negotiator.
