2001 Max

I am in the market to buy a newer car. upgrading from an 86 max wagon to a 2001 Max. Okay this car is fully loaded never been in an accident. I think it came with every option possible. The question i have for you guys is, IT has like 63000 miles on it. Now my 86 has like 186k and still runs like a champ everyday. The guy is asking 13500 bux for it, do you folks think it is work the money. and does anyone know what the gas mileage it gets cause the gas is closing in on 3 bux here. By the way it is an auto.

63,000 miles is nothing for these cars if they have been maintained like it deserves. Is it an Anniversary Edition? I think those are the ones with every option possible. If you think it's worth it, go for it. Haven't had my 2001 for long, but though I am very familiar with maxes. I've had a '87, '88, '98, and now a 2001. My '87 had 205,xxx miles on it and still ran like a champ when I sold it. Good luck on your decision. Ray

I bought my '01 no badge GXE with the "sport package" in Oct '04 for $13.5K it had 36,000 miles. It's my first Max and so far its been good as my daily driver. Milage is 20 mpg for every day driving and about 25 mpg highway. I wish it had heated mirrors. Thats something I will add.

The price sounds about right, but I'd talk the guy down a little bit; I got my car at a dealer with warranty extended to 100k for that much.

And in terms of gas mileage, I probably average somewhere around 20 (probably a little less) in mostly around the town driving.

me too

Hey Joe,

What did you end up doing? I'm in the market for one as well. The only thing holding me back is the v6 and its infamous mileage. Everything else is looking good.

Let me know if you got the price you wanted...etc. THanks a lot!

I would check you the Classifieds on this site for 5th and 5.5 gen cars. You can get a 5.5gen for an AWESOME price on the classifieds here, way better than any stealership would sell it to you for. I know I wish I would have!

The hardest part is finding someone in the same area. . . .(NW). Plus, how do you know the seller isn't BS'ing you too? At least the dealer has that certified used thing...and you don't feel bad for asking him all the billion questions about the car, unlike a private seller who really might not know wth is going on and conveniently forgot the last time the oil was changed..just my $.02 It's a risk on both sides . .kinda like life.

I completely disagree with you on the dealer vs. Private seller. I buy and sell cars as a side business with my father (5-15 cars a year) so I have a pretty good idea how this works out in the real world.
First off 99.9% of dealers don't know anything about the NEW cars they are selling, let alone a 4 year old model that just came in from a trade or auction. A dealer is MUCH less likely to know anything about the history of a car than a private seller. The whole "inspection" thing is a crock, some mechanic who would rather be eating donuts or whatever spends 10 minutes looking at the car....big whoop. I do a much more through inspection myself than any "Certified used car" goes through on a dealer lot.
Not to mention the fact that most dealers will lie out thier a$$ to get their commision. They could give a rat's a$$ if they are selling a POS or not.
With a private seller, you can get a feel for what kind of car person they are, i.e. do they drive a car into the ground an don't give a ****, or do they change the oil every 3k on the mark?
It is fairly easy to spot a car that isn't well taken care of.

The Best advice I can give to JoeSmoe23, is to be prudent, if you don't know much about cars and what to look for, bring a friend along with you to help you. Hell bring a friend along with you anyways to help check it out.
Good luck!
