my story for the weekend (a noobs try)

so ya, i changed the air filter, first thinking to myself lets start this sh|t from easy to hard...

i then approach cleaning the throttle body and replacing the fuel filter on a one time go...

heres a tip to those who have a 96 maxima gle with abs... theres not much room, forget that im a noob, i called my neighbour who has $10, 000 in tools and who is a mechanical engineer and mechanic and he was pissed about the crowdiness...

so ya, we finally replaced that ****, and i was on to the tb cleaning...which i didnt know at this time, i ruined my maf sensor because i unscrewed the sensor, and u cant, cause if u do, u break 3 metal connectors or watever...(but at this time i didnt know i broke it)

so i clean that tb and put everything back together and start that ****...my rpm wont let me pass 2500 and it stalls whenever i put to drive or watever...
this is my dads car and so im obviously sh|tting bricks...
my neighbour comes over again and tells me its broken, and i ask how he knows and he looked at me like a moron (i didnt break the two things inside the maf, it was the metal conductors in the box fused on top of the cylinder that was ****ed...

so ya...that was saturday morning...caused me to be late for work...and my neighbour tells me "ur looking at 250$ part here"
im ****ting bricks...i call my friend who owns a shop and he says "i replaced a nissan sentra one and it cost 100, but i dont know about maxima..."
monday morning today and i call a dealer in milton "$650" the guy in missisauga "550"...i say **** it, time to go to the wreck yard...those ppl are scum, i called for a 96 maxima mass air flow sensor and they give me an infinity j30 pressure sensor which was thrown back in their face...so i finally went to another one and actually got the part for $100...

i switch the seals from my original to the used one and all was swell...

in the end i paid $155 (canadian) for a mass air flow sensor, air filter, fuel filter
and that would have cost me more at a mechanic...so i gotta stay positive and think that i won here in some way

enjoy my story

by the way...at first today in the morning my car idled at 1400 and dropped to 900...is that a good idle?
however i thought 700 was the idle i was looking for...but then when i hold on the break and put it in 'drive' it goes to 700...

am i all good in the hood?

(one more thing to add to that story, i reset my ecu code and then i was getting the code 0505, i was really sh|tting bricks now but then i finally looked it up and it means no error, why the f@ck is there a code for no error, why not just blank? lol, o well, )
in the end, i had 3 heart attacks

Ye i guess theres some positive that came out of it. In the morning my car idles at 1500rpm then dips to around 750-850rpm. Yours sounds normal. Don't let this experience stop you from workin on your car. Just dont do anything dumb like open the radiator cap when car is warm or get your hair caught in the drive belt. Be safe

LOL Interesting story.

As for the 0505 code if nothing showed up when you went down to do the screw check method of the ecu you wouldnt know if its not throwing a code or your not doing it right if it just sat blank, its good so that you see 0505 and you know nothing is wrong with your car (emission related that is)

Idle is good to be around 700 there is a black screw you can turn to adjust the idle, try cleaning the IACV (there is a write up) and then check and see what you idle is and then adjust the scew after that. 900 isnt a bad idle but 700 is ideal.

Glad you posted your story, I honnestly didnt know there is a very specific way to take apart the maf, or replace for that matter. Glad I read this so that if I have to change a maf I know how to do it.

Sounds like you had one hell of a time.

ya the maf was a *****, but proly thats because my thing is so dirty and ****...but this dirt
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....=1#post3804775
made it like a clean layer on top and prevented any tear on the seal...lol...but ya, it was a work out detaching the seals and sh|t
in the end, twas good **** lol

o and by the way, thse people at wreck yards ar ethe scum of the earth...and the first place i was gonna steal another sensor that doesnt do anything, but they didnt have the car, at the second place they wouldnt let us pass...they got lucky cause i was looking for revenge on their business
sorry to any1 here who works at one, but wtf...

I have a '95, I put a pod filter after the MAF, and completely removed the MAF when installing, I don't recall seeing any seals or anything...

like this really... that thing at the bottom is the MAF..

(Take from VQPower.com HOWTO: Poormans HAI)

god damn ill be honest, i called it a seal, but its like a tubing around the end of it...it looks like its apart of the maf, but technically its not i guess...am i wrong or wat?
if ur looking at the side that is pushed into the rectangular box (not the air filter, the other thing) its got a rubber thing around it where the clamp normally goes on...the one i bought was ripped to shreds...
u completely removed the maf when installing? and kept it off? how did ur car run?
