Great Deal so i bought it, But...

So a Around November (i think) I purchased a Used VG from pick a part, one of their locations was closing and everithing was on sale for a $1. I purchased the engine and it has been sitting in storage for a long time now.

I have not even looked at the engine, never checked if it ran but thought I might need a spare and I could not beat the price. My current engine is running strong at 160,000 so im in no hurry to fix this thing, just wanted to know how much should I espect to pay to have this thing back to STOCK performance. (asuming I would need to replace all gaskets, pistons, ect...) (also asuming the block/head are not damged). basicaly would it even be worth it, or could I get a running low milage engine for less than what it would cost for me to rebuilt the junkyard engine? Any opinions, coments are greatly apreciated.

You could probably get a reliable running engine for around 400 if you looked i bet, and getting it rebuilt would definitely be more, saying that just the headgaskets alone are up at like 200.

$2,600 for a reman engine, it has to be cheaper to re-build. The Engine was $1, so even if I spend $600-$700 (I Think) to rebuild, the Junkyard engine would have new everithing and come out cheaper.

Has any Rebuilt the VG on their own? is my estimate ok?

EDIT: then again $400 for an OK engine is not bad at all, and it would leave me @ the point im at now. Besides I dont race the car, its my daily driver so used engine would be fine I guess.

Sorry my bustI listed the wrong engine a VG30DE lists at 2490. Guess I should read better, either way I think it would be cheaper (IF ONE DID THEIR OWN WORK) to rebuild.

If you can do the work, it would probably be a fun project, but i am in need of a new engine for my car, and unless you really know what the engine has been thru, i would just replace it when the time comes. My headgasket is bad and i am just replacing the engine.

LALO,

The cost to rebuild varies greatly on what you replace. You mentioned pistons, which alone cost $400 from the dealer. If your pistons were bad (I doubt it) I would just go pick up a used running VG for (which can be found for $400 or less). But assuming everything is in good shape, heres what parts you should replace and their respective cost (based on what ive paid through courtesy nissan).

Piston rings/rod bearings/crank bearings -$75
Front and rear main seals $50
Timing belt/tensioner/waterpump/thermostat ~$200
Gaskets $350
Knock sensor $175
Exhaust manifold studs $50

There maybe other parts that need replacement but this is the minimum (IMO, and from what I can think of off the top of my head) that should be replaced during the rebuild. Internetautomart has most of these parts much cheaper than the dealer
