How to tell if your strut mounts are shot?
Are my strut mounts shot??
I keep hearing a knocking/clunking noise in the area of my rear passenger side wheelwell when i go over bumbs and curbs mainly. any ideas?
One thing I've read suggests: open your hood and bounce the car up and down on - look for any movement near/of the strut mount. If it moves, the mount is bad. I've never used this method, so I can't vouch for its accuracy - but it makes sense.
My front mounts are shot. If you look at the springs and have someone turn the wheel you can see the tension build and then release, causing the clunk. It's really annoying. It should be an easy fix. If I could just find the time.

My bad. I thought the bearing was part of the mount kit. Thats what advance auto told me when I called for pricing.
I dont know if it matters but i have illuminas and Tiens H-techs i have had for about 8-9 months. installed by a local suspension place. just thought id mention that i have aftermarket suspension, in case it matters =P
I ment the little incline that goes up into parking lots or gas stations etc... =P
so anyway any ideas what the problem could be? mount, bearing, loose bolt, gremlins, etc....

I'd start by looking for a loose bolt at the top of the strut tower, the 3 mounting bolts and the center -strut retainming nut. Also shake the car up and down while viewing the retaining nut.If it move around its most likely the strut mount. Then take the wheel off and inspect the condition of the sway bar bushings and end links.
