Removal of Stock Shift ****?

Hey guys. I'm trying to remove my stock shift **** so I can install a leather shift boot to replace the stock vinyl one. For some reason, it won't just turn off. Is there a trick to getting these things off? I don't want to destroy my nice leather wrap shift **** to get it off. I've tried wrapping a towel around it and lightly using channel locks to see if I could turn it. No go. Am I doomed to destroying it or am I missing a trick in order to remove it? Thanks for the help.

The **** is glued onto the shifter with a thermoplastic. You can use a hair dryer to heat up the **** and shifter and that should soften the glue enough to where you can twist it off.

Thanks guys. I have a heat gun, but I'm afraid I'll melt the leather. I'll try the hairdryer and then torque it and pray that it breaks free. I'll let ya know what happens.

JUST LIKE THE STICKY SAYS, wrap some cloth around the ****, get a big enough pipe wrench or wide pliers and twist. I just twisted mine by hand and it came off but try the above.

We would be hurting if it did. Slide down the shift boot and heat up the stick itself to melt the glue. It may also work better to try and take it off on a hot day. It was pretty warm weather when I took mine off.
