Intake resonator...is this ok? *pics*

With people saying that removing the resonator under the battery tray does nothing bad, i decided to go ahead and do it.

My question is this: i started removing the battery when i noticed that the resonator piping just slides off. So i just disconnected the resonator piping from the snorkel, leaving about 5 inches of pipe going down for another source of air. Is it ok if i just leave it like this, or do HAVE TO take out the resonator? It seems to be lined up against the starter perfectly, and i don't see that it's going to cause any rattling. I just want to know if this is a good enough source of air and if it's safe.

Here's a pic to people who may not understand what i'm trying to get at:

aftermarket intake is supposed to lose hp/torque, and i don't want that.
this setup is supposed to gain some hp/torque, according to some people.

yes you are fine just taking out that tube, some people plug up that hole on the snorkel. and you are not gaining any horsepower or torque by doing this

I ended up just taking out the elbow peice. I'm going to get a splitter pipe, and have one end right near the fan, and route the other one to the foglight opening.

My friend says it sounds meaner the way it is right now without the elbow, but i myself cant really tell much of a difference. I mean it's a little deeper, but nowhere near the loudness of aftermarket intakes.
