How to break strut/shock??

ok, this is kind of an odd situation, but what's the best way to blow a strut or shock? my dad says that i can't replace the suspension until something is wrong with the stock ones. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. so, what can i do to speed up the process? if i can just break one, i can tell him the others will probably blow soon also, so any help is appreciated! thanks.

hrmm lets see, how to break something.... are you going to replace yourself? if you take it to a shop they can obviously tell it was sabotage, so dont do anything deliberate(drill holes :/) but id say drive the **** out of it and hit speed bumps at 45 and stuff like that. and drive on the shoulder of the highway so u hit those vibratey thingies. not to break it, but they sound cool

I would be inclined to listen to your father. We don't have all the details related to who paid for the car and how much your father has helped out along the way. It may be that you have footed the entire bill, but just the same I wouldn't p!ss him off.

By him a nice Father's Day present instead, lol!

LOL....ahhh this thread is funny...curbs are good...drive off a curb...just be careful about bending your rim...you need to get air or some serious impact up against those struts....load up all your buddies in the car and then go looking for ramps or something that will get you air...its easy to blow your struts, just use your imagination

wow, thanks for all the quick response, guys. i will be installing my illuminas as soon as performance peddlers gets the rears in stock (grr...1-2 weeks)the car has been passed down to me and we made a deal, so he won't be too upset. he just would rather see the money goin toward college next year rather than the car, but it just a few bucks and i'm working full time this summer. i can understand where he's coming from, but i don't think it will be a big deal down the road. i do have plenty of savings and multiple CD's for college, so that's my rationale.

Jack up your car so the spring coils seperate. Then just use some chanel lock plyers to rough up the metal rod coming out of the struts. This will allow the gas to escape faster. Will be obvious to a mechanic, but who is to say that they werent like that before you owned the car?

i'd say just buy the damn things, ship it to your friends house. and then say you paid like $100 bucks for all four shocks n springs. cause they accidentally sent him 2. or say that you got them cheap here at maxima.org cause there's a person selling it to you. i'd be more than happy to "SELL" you non-existant shocks n springs

When I see posts that say "my dad won't let me" I realize how young some of the crowd is on here. There are many 16-18 year olds picking up a 4th gen max when the family buys a newer car. It's a great car to start with.

If it's your parent's car and you are living under their roof, I'd say listen to your Dad! And consider yourself lucky that they game you a nice car to drive.

I apologize if this is not the situation. I don't mean to offend. I didn't get my own car until I was 22. I would have been happy with anything back in the day, even the 1986 toyota corolla that my dad used as a train station car. I felt lucky when I got to drive that 68HP bad boy around! Ha Ha! I had to avoid this one really steep hill in my neighborhood because the car would always die about 1/3 of the way up!

Appreciate what you have for now. You can soup-up your own ride later on when you are living under your own roof.

good advice.

Also if you will install them, and try to sell the stock ones to help cushion the final amount spent rather then destroy a strut or all 4 when someone might be returning their car to stock and would buy it off of you.

(Not responsible for advice given in this post) Just ride around with spring compressors the struts should blow after awhile. Honestly, don't do that; your dad probably said that because he would be footing the bill, but if you are paying 100% for parts and install I don't think it would be much of a problem. The best way to be able to do things approved by your parents is to gain their RESPECT.

just swap them at a friends, then sell your current struts and springs if theyre in great condition. thatll get you like $100+...but if you want to sabotage....you lose $100+

Jesus, this reminds me of a thread started to help a kid destroy his automatic transmission because his mom wouldn't let him swap it to a 5spd. I lose a little more faith in the future with each passing day.

Easy. I did this unwittingly on my 90 Stanza. I pulled a boat that pushed the rear end way down.

So all you have top do is load down the back end and go over some easy bumbs (speedbumps) You just want to overwork those struts.

Don't go hittin' stuff hard. When you hit stuff hard and fast you suspension doesn't move as far, and the shock is transfered to the rest of the vehicle.

this is funny and dumb.
are u really insane? don't you realize that since your dad won't let you do something, that anything u accrue or incurre will affect you? retarded, because i've never heard someone want to DESTROY something, regardless of situation. u must be hella rich, but even then, if u were, u needn't contemplate on installing new struts..

oh well,

you don't deserve a max, let alone any car. Breaking you car to get new parts is horribly irresponsible. If you were my kid i'd take back the car and kick your a$$

The way I see it is that you have 3 options-
1. Just buy new parts and ignore your parents and deal with the consequences(but judging from you post you'll be whining about your punishment)
2.Talk to them and try to negotiate new stuff(the civilized way and not cracking your car)
3. Keep it stock

Man, I think your dad and my dad should get together. Mine doesn't care for new suspension parts either, even though I REALLY need them...

Since your waiting for performancepeddlar.com to get rear shocks in stock, you can get them from http://www.adventon.com/acb/showprod...tGroup_ID=2803. They are $148.50 shipped, I believe. It will save you a few bucks. Thanks to d00df00d.

alright, i see where this is going. i bought the car from my dad with cash one day, not like, oh i'll pay ya back after college. so it's not like i'm tryin to destroy his car. he just doesn't want me putting anymore $$ into it. but this is it. i am seriously putting my foot down and stopping after the suspension. i have more power than i can handle so nothing needs to be added there, i just want a better way to handle it and to learn to drive a sportier car. i figured the struts were gonna go soon and I just wanted to be drivin better before the summer is over. he's fine with it if it has to be done, so that's the only hurdle. am i really gonna miss $500? i know money is tight during college, but i hardly spend money on anything right now and up until i acquired this car, I was incredibly thrifty. my sister who is a few years older would make this big deal every time i bought something..."Wow, you're actually spending your money!?" so i feel this big purchase is just making up for all the smaller ones that i missed out on before. i think i made my point. say what you want. this thread did have the intention of being lighthearted from the beginning, it was more or less thinking out loud, but it's hard to transfer sarcasm over the internet...
thanks anyway.

Cut springs = blown shocks within a couple of months

Chop shop ata buddies house

Edit: It's amazing how parents perspective change when you are making your own MONEY. get a job, and spend alot of time tinkering with your car, they will understand it is your hobby and passion, and realize that is what you do with your time, and learn to appriciate it. I'm talking my mom into getting 22's for her tahoe, and my dad is now back in the market for a 62 Impala

there's no damn point in why u wanna DESTROY something that's working. u dont f up and lude, just for the h22, but......

u get what u want, ur idea is wrong, but maybe it is interpreted wrong. ur dad freaking cares, so he is telling u, maybe its an issue in the family, but ur folks and you bleed the same blood, yes some financial, and title holding is diff't but in the end, does it matter??

hell no,

cuz ur a family, and ur dad is there to tell u NOT to spend money, be patient, if u have so much money, WAIT till the damn thing actually breaks, then fix it, in the mean time, use ur lucrative sum and spoil urself with something else.

bottom line, do what u want to do, if u wanna blow something out, just to get something in, u are DUMB, but if ur replacing something cuz it BROKE, then u are rational and logical.

oh well. nothings gonna stop u..

Site is as clear as mud. Is quantity 1 for 1 shock or for 1 set for the front? The wording says SHOCKS as in multiple and a quantity of 1 would mean 1 set for the front, but who knows...

Who in their right mind would pay over 100 bucks for a single shock. Thats just plain dumb.

i think it's for both. well, you get the whole 4 piece set for $408, although that's 2 shocks and 2 struts, so struts are generally more?

That site is $148.05 for a pair of rear shocks. I threw that site out there becuase the rears are cheaper there than at performancepeddler.com. The fronts are more at Adventon, therefore get the fronts at performancepeddler.com.

Mooney

Edit: If you get the front struts from Perfomance Peddler, and the back shocks from Adventon the total comes out to $389, I believe. Saves almost $20.

when buying fronts from PP and rears from Adventon, do both places give discounts for .org members or only PP? and does the $389 price include any or both discounts?
just figured it out myself.
Fronts from PP: 2 @ $128.73 a piece = $257.46 (after discount)
Rears from Adventon: set for both rear= $148.05
Total: $405.51
help me out if i'm missin something. i can't figure out how to get it under $400.

Check out the suspension group deals, too. May find a good price there. I bought from ImportCarParts a while back and the prices were excellent at the time and include shipping. I don't know how his current prices stack up.

Also, consider getting new Upper Strut Mounts, Strut Bearings, and Boots if you really want to do a complete update on the suspension. I've got a 1995 and the bearings and front mounts went this past year. I'd imagine yours will see a similar fate soon. Might as well change them while you are pulling the suspension out.

Lastly, if it's your own money and you can afford it easily, then it seems like a reasonable thing to do. My "listen to your dad" comment assumed that he said "no" because he would be paying for this on a car that you got from your parents (as opposed to bought from them).

Check out this link:

http://www.motorvate.ca/auto/maxima/...ut_bearing.htm

The strut bearing is just a plastic piece with an inner and outer ring. It's the thing that the front struts turn on when you turn your wheel from side-to-side. You know that they have "gone bad" (lost their lubrication) when you get a "crunk crunk crunk" sound as you turn your steering wheel from left to right. This is the springs "winding up" as you turn the wheel since the struts are not moving fluidly with the rest of the wheel assembly. Sometimes the mounts come with the bearing, too. Not always - be sure to check.
