For those who has a stick..

When you shift gear, do you fully depress the clutch all the way to the floor? My told buddy told me it's not necessary to step all way to the floor. As long as I step the clutch to the point where I can shift, that will do it. Any thoughts? and why?

I would depress the clutch past the engagement point before shifting to ensure you don't prematurely shift (e.g. while the engine is still transferring power). What's another two inchs?

There is a certain spot where the clutch grips every car is different, for ex on my stanza it would catch only when the pedal is almost fully depressed so i would need to press it in just a lil bit in order to shift. If you know the spot then u just need to press the peddle to a lil beyond that point.

thanks for the input. i know if i shift after the clutch engagement point it should be ok. what i was thinking that it might lengthen the life of the clutch if i dont have to depress all the way to the floor.

You should stop thinking from now on and read some books. How would this prolong the life of a clutch? When it's pressed in all the way the clutch is as far away from anything it can contact as it can. When it's out just past the disengagement point there is a chance it might still be slightly rubbing.

push the clutch all the way in.
It is not good to do otherwise, even if it will shift technically.

do whatever floats ur boat. u can shift either way. like dave said, if u dont press enough, clutch plate might still be rubbing. u might possibly grind when trying to put into the next gear. just find that sweet spot. every girl...car has one

Push it all the way in. Why risk grinding your gears?

You dont' wanan ride your clutch or have any premature wear, or replace bearing or clutch every 10k, or mess things up. Paritally engaged clutch, or not putting it in gear fully, or etc. etc. can lead to bad things...

What you do is, find the engagement point, and depress FULLY at least PASS the point, i mean it goes hand in hand. You can tell what's a smooth shift and what's a bad jerk, pop out. So make sure, in all situations depress PASS that engagement point, but that is, depress fully, SHIFT_, release slowly till it grabs smoothly and your good to go.

Since we are talking stick and I don't mean to hijack. How many of you hold the clutch in while moving in traffic or tight spots?? or in any 'particular situaiton'?

For example ur in 4th cruising, and you see traffic. What do you do?
You let your car slow down and u downshift to 2nd b4 revs too low, then N and let it roll to stop??

I am curious, cuz this friend of mines does CHOKE engine braking and I'm like WT heck?? Maybe its just my inexperience. I don't know much, but I do know that jolts and jerks are NOT NORMAL, rather I would coast, then brake if needed while downshifting mostly into 2nd, and then reaching N (prior to surging out) to a roll stop. The reason is, I was told that the ONLY TIME you ever press your clutch is to SHIFT< period >. Any excess extended duration of holding in of the clutch while reving, moving, is bad??

Thanks. Still trying to sort out diff't ideas and seek tips as to what is right or wrong. Cuz I taught myself stick, and that's just my consensus.

Holding the clutch is not bad, you arent killing the grears you are just wearing the clutch out. In my opinion best way to go when slowing down is press the clutch slow down and then shift to approprite gear, choaking the engine while breaking in high gear is very bad for tranny you can even smell the transmission fluid burn when you do that. I ride the clutch in traffic becaouse the maxima is just too jerky in 1st so i shift to second and hold the clutch slightly engadged... even thou this should ware the clutch faster I havent expirenced any exsessive clutch ware on a car that i did that every day for 5 years (nissan stanza).

its real easy to adjust the clutch pedal to engage where you want it to and then adjust the height of the pedal so you have just a lil bit of freeplay.
