way to improve radio signal strength in aftermarket HU?

Hey guys, when I installed my headunit months ago, I didn't give a second thought to my crappy reception becuase I had my Ipod hardwired to my headunit.

But now since I am driving to work every morning, I need to listen to Preston and Steve, and My signal keeps fading in and out, is there anyway to improve the strength of the signal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Some aftermarket HUs have powered antennas. Maybe yours needs to be switched on. My AVIC-N1, when I had it , had a problem with the radio and I took it back to the shop that day and powered it on and it worked after that.

You may want to take this to the A/V Electronics section for more expert advice.

u can also get an aftermarket antenna that goes on the ouside of your car. ususally its a think strip of metal, or wire coiled together. it goes on teh outside of your window, or somewhere on the car. you can use it instead of the oem antenna wired into the back window.

im haveing the same problems, since our car has a weird antenna conection to the stock head unit, the adapter my installer used had both connections for our weird connections (2 prong) aswell as a normal connector (one pronged), that is not connected to anything, could this be ruining my reception?

make sure the second connector is not touching any metal (ground) points in the car. it could be picking up engine noise and other electrical disturbances, and messing up your reception. i dont know if this would have a severe impact, but check to be sure.

Yes. Change the station. Your body is naturally reacting to such god awful programming by causing involuntary disturbances is aural equilibrium. Change the station, and everything will be fine.

lol...alright, to get technical on you...

Your amp is a class-D amplifier, which means that it utilizes MOSFET transistors in order to power the speakers. When power is switched in these transistors, a phenomena known as "Pulse-Wave Modulation" occurs in which a high-energy square wave is created (f-u Laplace, *******). This square wave is mostly used for energy for the speakers, but some harmonics slip through into your ground.

SO, I would go back and seriously look at your grounds. Make sure the grounds are touching BARE METAL (paint sanded off). Try this out and let us know how it works.

son of a b........you know what, I think I'll wait til we attack our little project to check all the wiring, since the dash we'll be ripped apart anyway, I can do that while you fiddle with both of our dashes....

or if i get some free time i'll do it before then.....should I check the grounds of the head unit or the grounds of my entire damn setup?

what side of the car does the antenna wire run to the back, passanger or drivers side, i think since my subs power wire is running on the driverside, if the antenna wire is on the same side, it could be causeing the static.

Your radio harness has a wire, a POWER ANTENNA wire...I think it's either blue or blue/white. Connect the radio wire to your aftermarket harness.

I've got an aftermarket HU tied into my stock rear window antenna using one of those antenna adapters that you guys are talking about. My reception is fine on all stations in AM and FM. I had an extra plug on my adapter too. I just insulated it and tied it back out of the way.

The other one is for digital signals, IIRC...
