Having Steering/Shimmy Issues...

Lately I have developed a somewhat moderate shimmy that seems to be at its worst between 50 and 60mph (then goes down to slight at about 70). Along with the shimmy, I have noticed that the steering has become very loose and seems to have a mind of its own at times. My first guess is that this is a control arm/tiebar issue but I really am not sure. I just had my new set of tires mounted and balanced about three weeks ago so I don't believe it's a balancing issue. Anyone else have this issue or suggestions as to what it might be?

Jack the front up, grab a wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and give it a shake. If there is excessive play, then it is your tie rod ends.

Ok, thanks DC gurus, I'll give that a shot in the morning.....probably couldn't hurt to replace them anyway but I was hoping to do the ES bushings at the same time as well.

This procedure is also used to test worn bearings.

I believe that to check for worn bearings, you grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock, not 9 and 3.

I think i am having the same issue. On the highway the steering shimmys a little and the steer feels loose. Iam figuring its the tie rods cause I am getting no noise to suggest it's the bearings. I also suspect the sway bar links as well. Gonna take it to nissan and have them check it out.....cause it's starting to drive me crazy!!!!!

What would you define as "excessive" play?

Its for a 4th Gen, but its pretty much the same...

And "excessive" play means that its obvious that something is busted because your wheel(s) will feel loose.
