I've got a bad coil pack in my 97 so I bought 6 used ones from a 96 with 80 000miles. I figure I would just go ahead and get all of them changed, this shouldn't be a problem right?

Also have 6 injectors from a 98 with 50 000miles coming in, should I go ahead and install those as well since I'm getting the coils done? Thanks guys.

 

Replacing injectors is far more involved than replacing the coils.

What are your symptoms? i.e. why do you think you need to replace the coils and or injectors?

And if your question is if 96 coils will work in a 97, the answer is yes. Just replace the coil(s) that are bad. No need to replace them all.

 

I'm getting intermitent misfire and the car sputters like crazy during WOT.

So you suggest only switching the bad one? I figured it would be best to just replace them all instead of replacing just the faulty one. 1 hour labor for 1 and 2 hours labor for all 6 is what it comes down to.

Are certain years more prone to developping faulty coils?

 

Are you doing the replacement yourself? It's a piece of cake in anycase, so it doesn't matter which route you take. 99 Hanshin coils (thats the brand) are prone to failure. 95/96 coils were rock solid. Since you bought all 6, I suppose you could just swap them all out. It shoudn't take more than 30 mins to swap out all 6 coils.

 

Are the 97 coils the same as 95/96? Mine's a 97 with a faulty coil so I assume I'll be better off just installing all 6 from a 96 since they're rock solid?

The labor time I quoted above is from the dealer. I might end up doing it myself though, if it's as easy as you say it is.

 

If you can change a tire, you can replace coil packs. Just replace all 6 and be done with it. Look at the how-to on replacing spark plugs - you have to pull the coils to replace the plugs - so you can follow those instructions.

 

Misfires under load usually always points to poor ignition.
Swap the coils and you should be fine.
