Intake idea...CAI

Good morning guys,
the idea is this: keep the stock air box but remove the piping that goes from it to the behind the headlight area. Now you have the hole from the box facing the pretty much the "frame" of the car on the other side of which we have the fender. Between the fender and the "frame" however we have a pretty good empty space. What if you make an extension starting from the box and going through the "frame" just a little bit so the end of it will end up being in empty area between the "frame" and the fender. Your next step would be puting a paneL K&N filter in place of your stock one and here you go. Comments?

P.S.
I removed my cone filter yesterday and put back my stock airbox. While doing this I took a good look at it-especialy on the inside. Well, I have no idea why it's shapped the way it is but what I know is that my car seems to be performing better with it and this is what made me think of a improved intake system incorporating the original box. Anyways, I am waiting for your thoughts.

P.S.S.
sorry if this has been talked about before...

Here's how you route the pipe. But the stock horn already is drawing air from right behind the headlight. IMHO if you want to go though all that trouble, might as well make the full cai. But you can keep your stock resonator section

I know what a "real" CAI looks like Actually I think that "my" setup involves less work. Also, the lenth of the piping will be much shorter then in your case. Will that be of any benefit I don't know. Not to mention that in my case there will be no "turns" which should yeld better flow speed. I'll try to make a diagram...

does the stock resonator section help if you have a custom cai like yours jeff?

i got the impression, that it just controlled the colume

hey how hard was it to relocate those relays and fuse panels that are orig. on top of the factory "cai" pipe?

How is this any different than what the stock horn does?

Yup. The stock horn is right below the arrow. It stops right behind the headlight. So I'm as how this person is doing something different.

well, how about the fact that in this setup, the pipe coming from the air box is 3 times shorter then stock and it is straight with zero turns and up-downs. It also sucks in as cold air as a typical CAI. It seems like the best possible scenario to me(don't forget about the panel K&N). Not to mention that you'll not have to relocate anything...

Oh. Well if you think it will do anything, go ahead and cut a 3-4" hole in the side of the fenderwell. I personally think that air is not significantly "colder" than the air behind the headlight. Nor do I think this "shorter" pipe really does anything to reduce the restriction in the intake tract. But what the hell? I'd like to see it.

I'll try it this coming weekend. On theory though the air going through should be colder then traditional CAI setup because of the size of the pipe-the air spends less time under the engine bay. Also, I can bet that the air temp in this area(between frame and fender) is just as cold as behind the front bumper...Also(in theory) the air speed must be faster because of lack of turns. I am not saying you'd feel it but....

They are all trying to prevent you from getting disappointed. You will end up spending hours on your intake idea and you wont be able to tell a difference at all, trust me, i know.

may be you're right but since I have plenty of time I thought I'd try it. Too bad I don't have an access to a dyno to prove everybody wrong

Generally: Shorter intake less torque, more high end pwr.
