From what I understand, it requires removing one of the existing transmission mounts and then fabricating and welding a new one for the 6spd. The first five gears are almost the same on the 5MT and the 6MT, the main difference is that the 6MT has an additional overdrive and some extra weight. It really all depends on what your priorities are...for racing, the 5MT is what you'd probably want; for an everyday highway cruiser, you might want the 6MT.

 

You also need to swap the ECU.

 

I only asked b/c I can get one for a little less than the cheapest 5spd I found.

Im at a loss for words.

 

I was woundering if it is better to swapping to a VQ35 engine with the 6spd trans from a 2K2 maxima. I'm planning on keeping my car for a LONG time from now.

 

Why waste all the time and go through all the headaches for such a marginal gain. I don't recall the 6sp Maxima doing much better (if at all), than a similarly equipped Altima 3.5 5sp. Come to think of it, i've seen better times for the Altima if anything.

 

The only advantage is very very very slight better gas mielage.

 

And you will spend more trying to make the tranmission work with your 4th gen than you will save in gas money. /thread

 

Is it better? What do you mean by better? That's a rather vague question. Haven't you read these posts about the 6-speed transmission. Not worth it IMO. Check the all-motor forum for information on the 3.5 swap, if by better you mean more powerful, then sure.

 

Use the 5spd for slightly more aggressive gearing. If you're feeling ambitious, use 1-3 gears from an 00 Altima for slightly better acceleration at the expense of fuel economy.

 

Do they have the same transmission case? Has someone done this, to swap the 1, 2, and 3 gears from an Altima into a Maxima? Does the 2.5S 5-spd Altima and the 3.5SE 5-spd Altima use the same transmission?

 

Jclaw on this board has done it. I believe the gears came out of a 3.5SE but I could be wrong.

If you're serious about doing this, you might as well bulletproof the gears before you put them in: cryo, shot peen (marginal benefit, these two), and deburr.
