Who knows stereos?

Here's the situation, repalced my two front speakers a few months ago. Just recently, the two fronts began fading in and out of operation. Sounded like a loose wire but to have both go at the same exact time is very odd. I checked the connections at the head unit and they are good. I've always installed my own stereos in my cars and am sure I connected everything correctly.

When I turn the fade all the way to the front speakers, they work okay. As I slowly bring the fade back to zero, they begin cutting out at about level 10 or so (15 is the highest level). So, the more power I give them through the head unit's fade control, the more likely the fronts work.

Here are the questions:

1. Could this problem be the head unit or is it something else?

2. In an unrelated topic, do Maximas take a certain size power attena or is it a generic size? How hard is it to replace a power antenna? Any good places to find a cheap one?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

you could have the polarity reversed causing the speakers to be out of sync. Check teh connections make sure you have positve and negative hooked correctly.

Yea it sounds like either a short in your wiring, or you have the polarity backwards. Double check on those and then let us know whats happening.
Im pretty good with stereos...if you cant figure it out..PM me.

is/was your max a "bose" edition with the bose sound system? if so and you didnt pull out the amps in the speaker wiring path before you installed everything (or afterwards either way) then those amps would interfere with proper speaker operation.

I should highlight that my system was working perfectly for over 4 months. This problem occured very abruptly and fairly recently. I've installed speakers and head units in several of my other cars and it is highly unlikely that I reversed polarities by accident. I know for sure that the wiring is correct at the head unit where I spliced in the wiring harness.

And no, my car doesn't have the Bose systerm.

Besides polarity, could it be the head unit?

Thanks for everyone's help on this.

It could possibly be the H.U. If you brought it to best buy or circuit city...or something like that, I think they would check it out for you.

I forget exactly where I bought it but I'm pretty sure I bought it online.

How can it be reversed polarity if everything sounded fine for several months and then both fronts started cutting out at the same time?

It just seems to be an HU problem based on the evidence at hand. Any further thoughts folks?

Thanks.

The output section of your h/u is toast. This has happened to me before but a non-Pioneer brand.

when it's fading out, does it go staticky? if it does, then you wired it wrongly in polarity. if it just fades out clean, then it's most likely your head unit.

It definitely fades out clean like someone is hitting a mute button. Then it comes back for a second or two then out again. No static.

At this point, I prefer that it be the head unit. That's an easy fix instead of having to tear open my doors and check wiring.

Anyone have any recommendations for new head units that can play MP3's? Don't need DVD.
