drive belt pulley fell off while driving

dunno how on earth this happened .. but basically , i was driving early in the morning and i hear a something hit the bottom of my car and the battery / brake light go on .. i pull over to see if i had a flat tire but didn't. I continued driving home (~3mi) figuring it had to do somethin w/ the drive belt.

came home, got flashlight and took an initial look ... small pulley on the top center of the drive belt setup had apparently come off ... all i see is a screw stud there where it's apparent it had come off ... just need to get another one and put a nut back on.

Do you think any damage done to the alternator or anythin? I noticed the belt was not moving while the engine was running at that point. I figured it'd continue moving, just scraping on that stud ...

pls give me feedback. I need to see if i can locate anotehr one ... damn it looks like a tight spot too to get my hands in there.

ill post pics

You're gonna have to get a new tensioner assembly. Just remember to tighten the nut securely next time.

Ya just get another idler pully. You can get a new one from pinicle nissan for $39 + shipping, here is a link; http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...5&model=Maxima

But Im sure there are a few people on here who have extras from parted motors of what not. I know Kelly (Xerox) up in Sac had a 2k motor he was parting out, and UNCdood also has a 2k motor he is parting out (I just bought some heads off him). Its actually pretty easy to replace too, but if you cant do it, there is always Matt.

Nah - not likely you did any damage... strange that the pulley came off though... I think the pulley and tensioner are sold as a set. It's a dealer only part.

thanks for the feedbck ... i foudn the part at the local dealer and spent 60 for the assembly .. whatever.

Wasn't hard to to install it.

Now ... how do i check the tension? I saw from a prev. thread that the belt should not turn more than 90 degrees ... do u check this from the bottom of the car where u can actually get a good hold of the belt??

Should be checked "1/2 way between the A/C pulley and the Main Crank Pulley and the belt shouldnt twist more than 90 degree"...They call it a 90 degree deflection..I check it all time since Im supercharged and needs to be perfect

While your down there it may be a good idea to do the Power steering belt as well...its not too hard
