After about a year and a half with the always illuminated clock mod, my clocks keeps fading and shutting off. I have to bang it to turn on again. Could the mod be the reason?? Has this happened to anyone else?

 

Mine does the exact same thing, no mods to it. I think it started after my alternator crapped out last year, but it's gotten worse lately. Goes off and on completely at random. Sometimes if I tap it, it kicks right back on, otherwise it's random off/on.

No idea what's causing it, but unless other stuff gets affected, I'm sure as hell not taking the dash apart to find out if it's a lose wire or solder point.

 

hasnt happened to me and ive had that done for about the same time as you have. check all the electrical wiring or even possibly maybe the clock itself is going out?

 

Whenever the clock fades in and out, it's time for a new one. It will eventually go dead. Mine did the same thing in my '95. Wiring and fuses were fine. Find one at a local junkyard or Ebay. Nissan wants close to $200.00 for these!

 

If you are at all handy with a soldering iron you can fix the clock. The problem is that the solder joints go bad and break and that what causes the clock to fade in and out. When you band the dashboard you make the joint reconnect but then it will just fade again.

To fix it just take out the clock (2 min) and then open it. Chances are you will be able to see the bad solder joint and you can just touch up that one. If you cant find the culprit then just touch up all the joints.

I dont have much soldering expierience but this is an easy fix even for a first timer. Just practice a little on a broken electronic device to get the hang of it. Soldering is a very useful skill to use and will save you a lot of money.

 

Are they the same clock as the i30? I know it's in a different place but if it's the same clock I'll give you one if you pay the shipping.

 

yeah, you need to re-solder the connections. the worst spot is the big power resistor. if you have a 8 to 10 power magnifying class, look at the solder at all the little legs of the components. the solder should appear nice and silvery shiny, not gray. the solder should also "disappear" onto the leg of the component without any line or seam.

i've had to re-solder both my 94 and 97 clocks. the problem was real bad on the 3rd gen but nissan claimed they fixed it on the 4th gen. they lied...
