Have fun with the Rac & Pinnion boots. I did mine not too long ago. It takes about a hour a side. Passenger side being the biggest PITA.

They are a pain. Toss the little metal twist ties they give you right in the garbage. Use a zip tie instead, you will save a huge headache.

heck, i drove on my first set of axles until all of the boot was gone and no grease left, just dirt, rocks, and bugs in the joints, and still no noise. eventually i got new ones.

and +1 on the zip tie idea.

Another thing that made it easier is this:

Imagine these are the end holes of the boot

o O

The larger of the two goes towards the inside to fit on the steering rac set up. The boot is a hella tight fit. I found it much easier to turn the larger end inside out, push it on to the steering rac and then flip it right side out around the steering rac. After that slowly pull the boot back to its proper seating place. I hope that make sense.

Something like that here...

Yeah I have and had some problems with my passenger side one. It's just leaking the grease out everytime I drive, not from the boot, but from them clamp. The boot itself is good but the clamp that holds it just doesn't hold it tight enough I guess. I've replaced the clamp like 3 times and still is leaks the grease. I don't know those universal clamps just suck guys, I need the actual OEM one which is almost $8 from the stealer just for one boot clamp. I had broken ring on the axile not a long ago, that's when my axle came off the bearing that holds it. I don't know how that happened, but I think my boot did that and it's all cause of those clamps.
Anyone know a good place where I can buy an actual OEM clamp not something like this...
http://www.prostreetonline.com/oem/q...tion=000801897

It says it's an OEM one, but it's realy not. I tried that one and it's a horrible design, can't even tight it hard enough.

sounds like a good idea. Also, was the rack/pinon making noise or were you referring to the CV Joint because I have a hard rubber to hard rubber noise when I make left hand turns. Only thing I could think of is the steering rack dust boot rubbing against the FSB bushing(S-techs, no alignment yet)

The outer front boot + clamp.

No I'm talking about the front outer boot and it's clamp. And that the grease is coming out from that boot sence the clamp doesn't hold it tight enough. I was looking to get those actual stock clamps not those fake OEM universal ones, but can't find them for cheap.

I can see why you heard some noise, holy crap thats bad, when was the last time you looked under your car! Prevenative maintence is key, and alot cheaper, good luck on that one.

shurik,
Check with Advance Auto for their CV boot kit, and look at the clamps that come with it. I've used their CV boot kit and clamps 2+ years ago with no problems. They may be able to sell you just the clamps if you can find out the right size (or they can look it up). You'll need a special pair of crimpers to draw the clamp tight and crimp the raised nub together to keep it tight. They sell the crimpers (plier things) on their tool aisle for about $5. May be worth it if you have multiple ones to do. I can send you a pic of my clamps (installed) and the crimpers if you need to see what type I'm talking about. Just PM me your email if needed.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Ok...not to be a smart *** or anything...but how exactly do you prevent boots from cracking?

BTW...I'm under my car at least once a week....don't ask...but i was there the week before and no issues....clearly not something that preventative maintenance could have done anything about.....

Um....what do you think?...of course it needs to be fixed ASAP. No one can give you a finite time for which the axle or your particular issue can go without it being fixed.

On another note....my parts are in...time to go to work tomorrow.

Pic is on it's way...

Looks like the one above. Mine came in the Advance Auto CV boot kit. They may sell them seperately. If not, you could possibly check with an industrial bearing supply shop in your area.

Nice to hear your proccess went though. I need to fix mine, it's just everytime I drive it's in my mind, and very very annoying that it's not done yet.
BTW Dave thanks a lot for the pic you sent me.
