How much to fix airbags.

Hey guys, my ghetto dealership ripped out the airbag light in my 98 SE. The light was flashing. They told me it was the one in the passenger seat. Which is the one that everyone has problems with. I guess they thought could fool me by taking the light out, a**holes. So how much would it cost to replace the airbag in the seat and have the light fixed?

alot... ari bags arent cheap and in a crash even just a fender bender they can cause the car to be totaled. I really dont know an exact price though.

there is no airbag in the seat on a 98. It's in the dashboard. and if you're somewhat mechanically inclined you can buy them for no more than $400 off ebay WITH THE MODULE (you need it when replacing airbags, otherwise it could blow the new bags).. get a haynes manual and install em yourself.

From what i hear it's not that difficult.

also, forgot to add.. im pretty sure once u replace the bags and module the light should go out (not 100% on that). Seems as though maybe the module is frozen, thus trippin the light.

Yes, there is side air-bags available in the 2 front seats on '98 Max's. My wife has a '98 SE & I have a '98 GLE, both with side air-bags in the seats.

On my wife's SE her light is flashing & it's the pass side air-bag, or the wire that breaks & it needs changing. I believe it's around $350.CDN. I was debating complaining to Nissan about it seeing it's a known problem & they should cover the cost.

you dont need to replace the air bag, you need to replace the module.. it is an issue with the wires on the module getting pulled or crimped. the new module has longer wires and fixes this problem. there is a TSB on it that isnt in the stickies.. i found it while trouble shooting my car.. local dealership here sells the module for around 350ish or you could buy the air bag for close to $600 but the air bag will not fix this problem. you need the module

Was told that there was a tsb on it but it isnt in the tsb sticky

TSB# ntb000043

If a 1998 or 1999 Maxima has the SRS light flashing, and self-diagnosis indicates either Side Module LH [OPEN] (code DA) or Side Module RH [OPEN] (code 7A), install a SRS side air bag module of the type indicated in the Parts Information section of thisbulletin to resolve this incident. This new side air bag module (with long harness) replaces both the air bag module and the seat sub-harness. See this bulletin for further details.

Part number K8EHM-7L002 Module A

oh and the leather package has the air bags in the 98 max's the standard cloth do not have Side airbags

Well the light has been ripped out, so I dont know if that is gonna cost anymore. Although I can still see a bit of the light on in the bottom of the Air Bag symbol so hopefully its still in there.

O god, I hope the dealer will do that for me. I dont feel comfortable messing with the airbag system. I would pay the dealer for everything, although I know its a ripoff but its the best way.

i doubt they ripped the socket out.. like maximase96 said they probably just took the bulb out.. if you have the dealer do it.. just make sure they dont screw you.. make sure they dont charge you for stuff that you dont really need... like the air bag itself

bulb may cost like $2.00

My 99 max GLE also have the same problem. I did put some electrical tape on the Airbag light. I had it checked at a dealer before: ... $1200 ... they said it's the passenger's side airbag and the rear airbag as well ... [sigh] ...

my 98 GLE has side air bags in the seat. They're a common pain in the a$$, as they trip the airbag light all the time.

Should I just get the light fixed and not worry about the side unit? I can still pass NY state inspection with the light flashing?

usually safty inspections check safty issues on your vehicle... i does depend on the shop and there rules on what they check but wipers, brakes horns airbags and imissions are all safty issues that are set forth by the state you live in.. i would of failed a car if the horn didnt work also.. just like if your wipers dont work or your brakes are bad or shocks are blown.... all a safty issue

rules and laws are good but sometimes there are rules that are not good. you should visit large cities like NYC. lots of people use horn to scare, irritate and even lean on the horn like its saying get the f out of my way. please come visit our city and stand on the corner of mid town manhattan. you will see and hear how horns are being used. well, may be a working horn is good, you use it to say get the f out of my way.
