2002 Brakes Feel Low

Ok i just had my Pads and Rotors replaced on my max about 1 month ago and the brake pedal felt low. So me and my friend decided to bleed the brakes, but it still feels the same. What could it be? I was thinking about taking it to the dealer to check it out but i want some inputs before i take it.

Do you mean your pedal is soft or your braking is not as strong? It could be that the pads and rotors are not working well together. You would only need to bleed the brakes if you replaced calipers or brake hoses. Are the replacement parts OEM or aftermarket?

The pedal is soft. And both pads and rotors are OEM replacements.

Were they Nissan parts??? Some OEM replacement parts have a different feel. I found that out the hardway on my 626 ES.

Did you bed them in correctly?

What exactly will that do? Doesn't sound like a permanent solution at all.

My brakes are soft as well... I've caught myself a couple of times nearly rear-endin someone

The dealer did it for me.......It was a mazda dealer since we bought the car used from them. It was free too so thats why i took it to them....But they said they ordered the parts from a nissan dealer.

That may be part of the problem. They could have used something other than Nissan OEM parts. While it may have been free for you, they would have to shell out the money for replacement parts. They could have used Auto Zone parts unless you saw them buy and install Nissan parts yourself.

Check
#1 Pads are free to slide in brackets
#2 Check slide pins in calipers are not frozen up.
#3 Check that the piston slot in the rear calipers are lined up with the pin on the rear pads. (this being the most common after a bad brake job)

"Progress" had 2 of the above problems on his Max and I believe his pedal feel is much better now. See if he chimes in

The problem most likely lies in the brake fluid. It only takes a few occurences of being overheated for the fluid to lose it's previous hydraulic characteristics. The solution is to have the brake fluid replaced with an exchange machine. In regard to the stainless steel lines, the stock rubber Nissan lines are actually rated higher than the SS lines available for our cars. When you had your SS lines put on, the fluid was also exchanged.

On that note, try using Valvoline Synpower synthetic brake fluid. Its pretty cheap and recommended by many.

I just my 2002 nissan maxima and that same thing almost happened to me. I just upgraded from a 2002 turbo'd mazda protege and the brakes felt some much stronger.

^ You have two 5.5 gens?

A 530i stopped short and turned on me at about 35mph (10 under limit b/c of rain) I slammed on the brakes in my mom's Camry and stopped just a few inches off his bumper. I then thanked God I wasn't driving the Maxima, there is no way I could've made that stop with it.

I remember someone saying that the brakes on Maximas are single piston calipers, and that they're just adequate for stopping such a big car.(heard Infiniti I30/35's have much better brakes correct me if I'm wrong)

Funny, I just had my rear rotors replaced and new pads, the fronts turned with new ceramic pads. I was feeling the same sensation with the brakes. I going to replace the fluid soon and try a few other things. I'll post on my progress.

I would change it if it's dark colored versus clear. I plan on flushing mine soon.
