only way to advance timing in a 4th gen is thru the ecu .

we have a timing chain that is not adjustable..

This can only be done through the ecu on the 5th gens also. I don't know what the factory's spec for timing is, but I think the dealerships have a couple of degrees either way to play with.

Think of timing this way. If your ecu sees the knock sensor going off... it thinks detonation and retards the timing, which is a much safer condition. The only problem is that this makes less power. This is kinda the same idea as with a/f ratios. It is much safer to run rich, but more power can be had by running lean.

Ideally, you'd like to advance your timing as far as safely possible. The next time my car is in the shop, I am going to ask the dealership what their spec for timing is and have them advance mine as far as they'll allow. I suspect this will only be a couple of degrees which should still be very conservative. It gets hot here in AZ, but I do always run premium gas just as a precautionary measure. Hopefully this'll give me a few extra ponies.

 

Is there a way to trick the computer with the knock sensor as to get full timing, via not retarded. Or can the KS be positioned differently to make the ecu put out more timing.. Also, If the KS has lots of mileage does this make for worse timing, kinda like, Is It good or bad, or can It be In-between. Lastly, I'm running rich by plugging the diaphragm vacuum line and the car feel like a rocket, but If I lean It out, will I get even better results. Thanks In advance. I'm In NY
