How to recondition the starter motor

I know this has been done before. But here is my personal experience. If I can do it, so can you.

Nice job. I now understand what everyone is talking about regarding the gummed up insides of Maxima starters. A picture is worth a thousand words...

Great pics. Thanks.
There was one thing that worried me: the use of methylated spirit.
Magnet wire is either insulated with a shellac based varnish or a polyurethane varnish. Methylated spirit dissolves shellac quite easily! I am not sure about its effect on polyurethane varnish but I recommend keeping solvents well away from the winding.

Thanks guys,

I better make an update, I didnt apply meth on the magnet/ wiring. That was already clean enough.

Thanks for highlighting it.

Really I think you save yourself a lot of trouble by just buying a new starter. How often are you going to clean that thing before the solenoid dies or the parts wear out. Buy a new starter and be done with it for the life of the car.

best pix I have seen

I tried to get mine out- gave up- in pix 1 could not get the two "scrws" off that hold the air intake- also there was an electrical connectior that would not come apart and i could hardly see the starter bolts-- on a 99

I looked at my toyota v6- he++ of a lot easier to get to the starter

starter and the egr piping on 99 maxima are bad design as far as getting to them

just want to say thanks for this writeup. followed it today and my problem is solved. i was getting nothing but a click from under the hood, and the car took about 3 tries before it finally started. cleaned, regreased and reassembled and the problem is 100% gone. if anyone is having similar symptoms i highly suggest you give this a shot before shelling out the $150 for a new starter.
PS I substituted the methylated spirit with this nonflamable electrical component degreaser spray that I found at Strauss. worked very well
