Just got an oil change and now it smells like burning

I just changed my oil with a buddy of mine. We drained the oil...Did that flawlessly. Removing the oil filter was a little harder...It got really tight so he banged on it a few times and it came off. Got a new K&N oil filter (HP-1010) back on. Filled up approximately 4L of Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30. Drove home and everything was great. However, I decided to go out at night and the first thing I noticed is that my car smelled like burning. Popped the hood and a cloud of smoke came out along the passenger with the smell. I didn't see anything leak and everything seems normal. It doesn't smell like oil burning...Any idea?

Ah, should have went to JiffyLube. I think you're leaking oil somewhere. Did you put the fill cap back on?

Uh oh the oil filter spot where your friend banged on is on the passenger side, find some relation there?

did you oil the seal of the new fuel filter before screwing it in?

did you re-verifiy oil level after letting the car run for a minute or two (filling the filter)

You must mean "oil" filter.

But he banged on the oil filter only. And the rubber seal around the filter was good. We made sure to lube it a bit as well....So confused...

Its probably oil on the exhaust piping and should burn off. Dont worry about it. Just keep an eye on the oil level for the next couple days.

Sounds like you just got some oil somewhere, should be okay. Just watch the oil level.

This is a long shot, but check to see if the rubber gasket from the old filter got stuck onto the engine. You may have two rubber gaskets which will let oil come out and get on everything. Check your oil level and look closely at your filter to see if its on flush with the engine.

You probably just spilled oil somewhere. In the future I would avoid "banging" during any car repair.
