Ok sorry I dont post much just lurk, I noticed today that when my car is running I only get exhaust coming out of one of the pipes off the stock muffler, the passenger side pipe. What the heck? Does this mean that the muffler is blocked or fried or what? Anythoughts?

Thanks guys!

the maxima actually has an ingenius chambered exhaust...at low rpms only one pipe is "open," so some backpressure remains. Under heavy load/WOT, a little "flap" opens and then both pipes have exhaust coming out.
perfectly normal.

Uh oh! Backpressure!? Aren't you thinking of exhaust velocity?

Ahhh thank you my good man. I do believe that this is the fastest response I have ever gotten here, perhaps the crowd has changed in the last few years. I cant believe I have been here over 2 years and dont even have 200 posts.

Secretly I was hoping you were going to tell me it was fried and I would "have" to go out and get a new flowmaster or something of that nature.

Explaining things in layman's terms is the easiest course of action, in my opinion. "Backpressure" is a widely-used (mis)nomer, but is more useful for explaining basic exhaust q's than getting into the whole "exhaust velocity" discussion for the 600th time.....

Yeah I remember seeing a link somewhere on these pages to a nissan site that had a little tutorial on how this worked, I was pretty impressed.

Hey irish..How do you find all these things out?...I've seen my Maxima do that, and just thought that the left pipe was for breathing of some sort..go figure!

Just curious, how can exhaust velocity in the manifold be increased by abstracting the flow far a way in the muffler? It seems like all it would do is create more back-pressure.

It's not that I really need to know that. Since conversation was already started... I figured I might as well ask, just out of curiosity.

Well, I guess I will search...

Let's not exaggerate here, I most certainly don't know the cosine of the square root of 345,326,166,321 to the 5th power.

Klop..As you learn more about engines you will be amazed at what effect different things can have on different aspect of a engine. I'll give you a good example of something you have most likely seen but didn't realize it can add up to 5HP. Look at the exhaust pipe on some cars you will notice they have a half circle cut in them. Some are even cut at an angle. This has an effect on the pulse wave from the exhaust and does effect flow. On some GM cars it adds about 5HP. It's amazing stuff.

Irish... I would like to know if you don't mind a little more about how this extra valve/flap in the muffler works. Is it mech. or what...?

from an old article:

a new variable capacity muffler derived from the one on the high performance Nissan Skyline GT-R. A special muffler flap valve, using high temperature aerospace spring technology and materials, opens at 2,000 rpm and above – reducing exhaust system backpressure

gatta be mechanical... there aren't any wires going to it. There's probably some kind off valve which is opened by exhaust pressure when it exceeds certain point.

That and the variable intake is the whole reason between the horsepower difference with 4th and 5th gens right?
