I'm thinking about replacing my open diff 6-speed with 3rd gear crunch with a low mile unit with HLSD. Probably in the next few weeks.

If I find a tranny from an 03 will it bolt right in?

Also, how can I confirm that a tranny has HLSD. Is it incoded in the VIN or on the tranny itself?

I'm pretty sure you can use an 03 trans, afterall, we can even use A34 trannies. In fact, you might even want to look into that, since the gear ratios are better on the A34 6 speed. I haven't done much research on it yet, but I've been told by a reliable source that its a direct bolt on.

IIRC, there is no indication on the housing itself that it is HLSD equipped, you have find out either using the VIN or the transaxle code on the vehicle's firewall. A transaxle code ending in "H" means it has HLSD and ending in "A" means open diff.

Thanks. I figured it would be.

I'm not familiar with the A34 tranny though. Which car is that from?

A34 = 04-06 Maximas

It is supposed to have a lower final drive and better 3rd gear synchro.

I'd go a34 tranny anyday...you can pick up a brand new unit from Nissan for $1,776.65....not sure how much they'd charge you for shipping though...but it does come with HLSD already! not too shabby for a brand new unit ain't it?

Just having the HLSD equipped tranny may not solve the 3rd gear grind issue. Since it is the synchro that's the issue, you may still have the problem with the 03 tranny.

Shoot!!. I just cought the last 50 seconds of the auction. Not enough time to check it out.

I think I've found one but the trans code ends in a 0. It's from an 04 car. Are the trans codes different on the A34?
