which fog lights are best in fog?

I do want my fog lights to look good but I care much more about how well they work in fog. Now, Im only looking for h3 bulbs, cause one of mine burned out. So, which h3 bulbs are best for driving in foggy conditions? Post pics if you can. Thanks.

Any yellowish type bulbs are the best color. Luminics are a nice color, but ive heard mixed reviews. PIAA ion crystals aren't bad, but are a lighter yellow. They can be pricey though. Try www.optauto.com

The point of fog lights is not for you to be able to see through the fog but its more for the other drivers to be able to spot you.

Nokya's came out with a bright yellow one, looks like the lexus yellow fogs. i would go for that, it looks nice!

i assumed fogs were supposed to put the 'concetrated' intense light closer to the ground so it would have less chance to get dispersed and could light up the actual road and lines better hence most fog lights being lower to the ground than headlights, which have more fog to cut through to get to the ground = more dispersion. i have never seen fogs above headlights, yet 3rd brake lights, which are intended for high car visability of ur car are always at least the same height as part of the tails (like on a scion tC), and most of the time much higher but i could be mistaken this is just my assumption

Yes, foglights are meant for you to be able to see better in the fog, they're supposed to sort of illuminate "under" the fog whereas regular low beams just go through it. Rear fog lights are so others can see you better... I don't see how anyone could see you any better with foglights than regular ol' low beams.

The yellow light doesn't glare as much, and it doesn't get dispersed by the fog as much... but in the end it doesn't make a difference since there is the same amount of yellow light being produced by the white foglights as there is by the yellow foglights. People like yellow foglights primarily for looks and because everyone wants to look like IS300s.

Yeah, but the stock fog's beam pattern is shameful. For super awesome fogs, retro some fog projectors with some 3000K HID bulbs (and ballasts of course), or put in lexus yellow projectors with 4300K bulbs.

Fogs rambling

fog lights are suppose to illuminate without reflecting too much light back to the driver. What's hardest about driving in the fog is not the road being under illuminated, but the fact the (glare from the) light reflected from your lights are overpowering to see anything else

They’re placed low so they wont hit a wall of fog perpendicularly and reflect the most of the light back to the driver.

The theory of yellow light being able to pierce thru fog hasn't really been proven and many scholars will argue both ways. However here's my 2 cents, yellow is in the middle of the spectrum of colors that makeup "white". Therefore yellow is the one single color that can be used instead of white to illuminate and be comfortable to ur eyes.

When u use one color, only particles of that color can reflect light. Since white is madeup of all the colors it is reflected by all colored particles (esp. water vapor) hence white is the worse color if you don’t want back too much reflection and yellow is the ideal color to illuminate with minimal reflection.

so its a combination of placement and color.

rear fog lights are just brighter with chromed reflectors

Firts of all hids are not yellow, second you dont want hids for fogs! third fog lights arent just for fog but for snow conditions also. Crystal Ion is the best H3 fog bulb out It looked awesome in my parents LX470 projector lights but now i got them in my max. Not as yelowish looking but still enough and they have like a rainbow tint! Also they get hot which is why hids suck in winter. snow just covers them up. the crystal ion did a good job in a major snowstorm back when i was driving the suv from ny to ma!

3000K HIDs are yellow. There is nothing wrong with yellow HIDs for fogs, the only effect is that they're brighter than halogens.

Wowzers, how in the world do you do that? Do tell....

Is there a write up on how to do this? I think I saw something in the HOW TO section but I think they used an actual HID bulb...

don't have that setup, decided to go with hella ff50 with hid's. but here's the write-up
http://mysite.verizon.net/dinhdu/index.htm

i kinda miss my yellow foglight setup. i want to go with a 3k hid setup instead of my 6k.

devilz, you can use hid or halogen, up to you. but hid's will be brighter of course. and if you do decide to do this get the capsules with the metal brackets in them. it's just easier.

I had these bulbs and they burnt out reather quickly. I only used the fogs when it was foggy and they lasted about 5 months. I am still trying to find better bulbs.

Major bumpage, dude. Has anyone tried a reputable brand yellow fog? I.e. not ricey Luminics or Noyka or PIAA. I know Hella, Narva, GE, Osram, and Philips make some selective yellow H3 bulbs. I bet they'd be higher quality.

Here's a link to a few different ones from CPI - they stock Narva Gold

Thanks for the link. Yeah....major bumpage....I was just snooping around and ran across this thread and added what I thought about the Noyka bulbs. I know there are many .ORGers who like these, but mine burnt out way too fast IMHO.

i have the PIAA 959's on my car , i like the light output, and they aren't so blinding to other driver. They are really good in the snowstorms we have here in Colo. I'll post pics of both the factory retro yellow capsules and the PIAA's and let you decide for yourself what looks better. My avatar is with the factory conversion.....
