I have a '97 Max loaded. All the amenities both my wife and I desired. however, when Mom comes back from food shopping, she beeps the horn to let me know she is home if she needs help with the packages. What irritates me is the sound of the horn. It sounds like a chincy tin horn. I would think that with an efficient and possibly muscle car, Nissan could at least match the horn with the muscle of this car. Puny Pontiacs fall apart after the first year but their horns hit 110 Decibels and last long after its' owners. Is there an upgrade to the Max horn that can bring some respect and attention to this car?

Please advise

A friend who drives a '98 Maxima had the same complaint. He bought a pair of modestly-priced Fiamm electric horns at Pep Boys. They were easy to install and have a significantly louder sound.

Air horns are even louder but you have the problem of finding a good place to mount the compressor. You also have to mount an auxiliary horn relay and a thick power lead to that relay, and from the relay to the horn. Some people say you don't need that auxiliary relay. Experience proves them wrong.

Airhorns are not as difficult to install as it may seem. I would definitely recommend them. They are a great upgrade for the money. Here are some installation instructions that will give you an idea of the installation:

Please keep in mind there are a few different locations that the actual horns can be mounted. If you check out my homepage you'll see that I mounted mine behind the grill.

Where do you get those train horn? All the BIG horns uses a real air compressor with air tank and they run from ~$150 and up. I have the triple air horn mounting near the coolant tank. It's not that loud with the hood closed.

My friend just ordered the Animal House horn for his Ford truck. Here is the description: "Clear the road with this horn's collection of 9 animal sounds, 10 sirens and 16 tunes. Microphone lets you use the horn as a PA system. Adjust the volume from soft to super loud. Easy to install in all 12 volt vehicles." It was $40 and he ordered it on Wednesday so he doesn't have it yet. It is item number 40436 at www.harborfreight.com . It may not be what your looking for but I thought I would tell u about it. I can't wait to see what this thing can do...

That's just a Japanese car for you. There are some things American cars do right, at least you can honk or use the power outlet if the car is off. Also, my best friend has a '92 Cavalier and it has standard ABS. And this is optional equipment on a '97 flagship $29,000 Nissan? And yes, I hate my horn. No kinda loud at all. Wish I had a GM one. (horn, not the car!!!)

Matty,
Hope the horns work for you. Sounds like you have my "ear".
Keep me posted on your adventure with these new horns.
I really need to replace that wimpy horn in my Max.

If you like the GM horns, you should hear BMW horns, MUCH better.

Go to a junkyard and get a set! The most you would probably have to do is fit them in your car (drilling) and splicing the wire connections to fit. If power is a problem, then use the existing wire on the car and use it as a "relay signal imput" and use a relay to do the work.
