I've researched this topic and I believe that the issue as stated in the first link that i've provided below is the answer to my questions. As I accelerate through my gears the "whine" grows louder. When i'm in neutral with my foot off the clutch resting on my dead pedal there isn't any noise. The noise only prevails while drving in gear.

So my question to you all as what would be involved in a complete rebuild of a transmission? i'd like to do this myself and essentially what i'm asking for is a list of "ingredients" needed for this rebuild. I doubt that there are any "how-to's" for this project, but if there is one somewhere I would appreciate it greatly. Of course I do have the FSM for any other info needed.

Dont think it is the release bearing... More than likely it is one of the main or input shaft bearings on the tranny. Eric and I just got his resolved on his 96 I30 5spd.

I would drop in that 96 I30 5spd you got layin around. Since that thing was recently rebuilt, you should be good to go for a while once it is in.

thank you for your response.
how hard do you think this fix is? once the tranny is dropped of course...
and would there be anything else that I could fix once in there? my gears aren't shifting as nicely as they once were. the clutch was replaced a few years ago. about 100k.

I've never done it myself, but I do have a dead tranny core that I'm thinking of rebuilding. The hard shifting may be improved with new synchros.
Jclaw rebuilt one of these trannys with no prior experience.
Might wanna check this out.

I know how you feel. I had my 5spd die, not once, but twice in my 2000 maxima. It's not just hurting you, but your tranny. Get it fixed ASAP.

With the motorvate link and the FSM, you should be able to do it yourself. Just remember to be very meticulous in your work. Be sure to clean the tranny throughly and do it in a clean and spacious work area.

I'm not sure if you can get this done in a weekend since the parts may be a little hard to come by, especially the shims. I priced it out once for the bearings and synchros and I think it came to around $350 from Dave B.

I rebuilt mine, without the synchros. I got all the bearings and seals in a kit, for about $130 I think. Its not that hard with a FSM, but take your time. Count on some down time while you order shims too, because the shims in it most likely will not be correct.
hey guys, what is the gage tool you use to measure load on the bearing to place correct shims?
My tranny is down and bearings and seals coming in today from Dave B. Hopefully thats all I need.
