I think my tranny is toa$t

Well.....the never-ending saga continues

Basically...Ive never heard any noise besides NORMAL rotation sounds. After my freeking accient back in Oct. of 2005....I didnt drive the car again until March of 2006....

Front end collision, and Im thinking the impact broke my differential or something.

-Im leaking gear oil out of the drivers side -- (VERY small drips on my driveway) after doing some highway runs. (changed the axle seal....still does it)
-There's whining like a **** in 1st and 2nd gear at CERTAIN throttle positions while accelerating...like mid throttle....anything above or below sounds almost normal.
-Something ungodly smells like sh*t after highway runs.....doesnt smell like clutch, brakes, or oil... burning

As far as the tranny and clutch......it shifts and engages fine - the shifter would seem like it would get stuck in a gear, and Id have to pull just a tad bit harder to shift.

What do yall think? 122k original miles are on it...but it was fine before my accident..

I'd say it's possible, depending on the severity of the collision, that a few things in your tranny got knocked slightly out of whack and slowly started to fark it up. I dunno about you, but at 122k I'd look at this as a good excuse to upgrade to a low mileage AE tranny.

But I think we're all waiting for dgeesman's word.

Call Marvin and chat with him, he should be able to rebuild your tranny for a decent price. Plus he already has some rebuilt 4th gen and 5th gen trannies.

Going to get a 5th gen Tranny from him.

I trust Marvin and the work he has done on transmissions. If I was in need for a new transmission right now I would call him first.

A warranty may cover you for 10K miles. I am sure the thing will last atleast that much even from a stealership. You may be better off picking up one from someone that members of the org have done business with for a lot cheaper.

My money is definitely on diff bearings.

I've actually had exactly the same noise, and once it showed up it quite literally started getting worse by the mile.

I would suggest one of two things:

1. Pay top dollar for a brand new LSD transmission from the dealer ($1800) Shop around for a driver side LSD axle for another $100

2. Get a rebuilt transmission from Marvin and give him your core. He should have 4th or 5th gens with less miles than yours, and are fully rebuilt. Cyrotreated would cost quite a bit more.

I actually have one of Marvin's rebuilt transmissions now and its butter smooth. If you are local he will definitely take care of you if there are any issues.

Best of luck

Marvin had a customer in New York city that had a complaint.
Marvin drove up there this past weekend and fixed it.

The org members have a thing about hijacking threads, there is a special forum to practice in to get your post count up. Or . . .
Are you sure you're not driving something made by Chrysler?

Well i mean, aside from the shifting. Its whining and smells like crap. The smelling i guess may not necessarily be from the tranny, but all these things seemed to happen all around the same time. So i would assume thats what it is.

I just had a tuneup the other day, and they didnt seem to find anything wrong at the time.

QuiksilverMusic, you are talking about an automatic. Did you notice that this thread is about a manual transmission? They're completely different in how they're built and how they operate. Even when they seem to have similar problems, the causes, diagnostics, and repair process will be equally different for each tranny.

Fixing an automatic is expensive. If you don't have funds growing on trees, your only option is to find a used automatic tranny at a junkyard, have it installed, and take your chances. If you can't do that, drive EASY on it and hope it lasts until you have the funds to fix it.

sorry to hear about your tranny problems, and I think I'm about to be in that boat too. Mine has ~120K on it now, and I believe it is the original, though I'm not sure (bought at 88k). I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do.

Any rebuilders near Ohio or Indiana?

It might be different in your area, but I know around here the repair shops don't honor warranties to cars that are modded. So before I paid top dollar I would check it out.
