squeaky squeaky....belt??

never happened in the winter but now that its hot out when i start my car it squeaks loudly for a while (probably 15minutes) then the squeak gets a little quieter but still is noticable. im pretty sure its my surpentine belt (however u spell it)...so my question to you:

does it mean it needs to be replaced? if so, what problems would it cause by not replacing it/how bad would it be if it wasnt replaced?

thanks for the help!

If it's squealed for 15 minutes straight, the belt is def. shot. When a belt chirps on startup or squeals for a few seconds I just tighten it a little bit, but if it squeals much longer I assume the rubber surface is glazed and damaged. You should have the belt-driven accessories checked out to make sure that one of them isn't seizing and causing the problem.

Take a quick look at the grooves in the belts. If you see cracks and pieces missing/worn, it's definitley time for replacing. Man, if they squealed for 15 minutes, then something is definitely wrong! There are only 2 belts. Stealership charges less than $100.00 to get them replaced (down here in PA, anyway).
