How to remove screws in fuel injector caps?

Hi all,

I finally got my upper and lower intake manifold off to replace a couple dead fuel injectors, and get the rest of them tested and cleaned. That was a nightmare of limited access and old, stuck, and cracked hoses. I hope I remember how to put it back together!

Now, I can't get the screws out of the caps that hold the fuel injectors in the rail. I am using what I believe is the correct size phillips head. I have put as much weight as I can bear on them while holding the screwdriver as straight as possible and all I have done is strip the head of one. I tried PB Blaster (penetrating oil) and that hasn't helped. I am about ready to try those easyout sockets for stripped head screws like Sears sells and just buy new screws. Is there anything else less damaging I could try on the non-stripped screws?

Why oh why didn't Nissan use a hex or tork headed screw if they were going to screw them in that tight!!!

Thanks.

impact screwdriver...makes things like that super easy. You can get them at harborfreight for less than $5 usually.

well they arent on sale right not (they may be at the local level though) but are still cheap.

Here is a link.

I managed to get mine out with a large phillips head and much force down on the rail in a vise. I replaced the screws with socket head stainless steel bolts, from the hardware store.

I've heard of pneumatic screwdrivers, but not impact screwdrivers. Thanks, I'm gonna get one.

@92 Max
I guess they were metric right? Do you happen to remember what size?

Do you mean me, and about how to remove the screws in the injectors? If so, I read them a long time ago but not recently. I just went back to check and found a sticky only on the VE fuel injector removal, but not on the VG (which is what I have.) I also didn't see anything about what size the screws are, which was my other question. So I guess I don't know what you mean ???

they are great...I have used mine a lot. There is a trick to them though because you can not only loosen but you can also tighten with it. If it doesnt have directions you just put it on the screw and turn it until it turns no more. That sets it so when you strike it with a hammer the force will make it continue to turn that way (for lack of better terms). I guess its hard to explain but when you get one you will understand what I am saying.

If you can fit a needle nose vise clamp and wiggle it back/forth until you hear it "crack" loose, that's what I did on my VE rails

use a hacksaw and cut a slit across the (screw) head and use a flat head screw driver. the trickiest part is getting an angle on the screw with the hacksaw to cut the slot. the method works great.

Thanks to Michael, the impact screwdriver made this stupid easy. I got mine from Oreilly for $12. All but 2 screws came out quickly even when I probably used it incorrectly. The one tip I would give new users is they work best when you twist the screwdriver as you strike it. That got those last 2 screws easier than the first 10.

Now, I can't get the injectors out of the rail. If anyone has ideas on this, I would appreciate a reply in the new thread.

Thanks again everyone.

I just grabbed the outside of the screw with my vise grips. Cracked them lose easily. I didn't have an impact screwdriver laying around.

You used a needle nose vise. We used regular 'ole vise grips.

I didn't have problems with the screws (fortunately). I grabbed the fuel injector with a channel lock, twisted and pulled and with a little BS&I (brute strength and ignorance) it came out.

This is the hardest part. The injectors glue themselves in with varnish from the gas. Also, the plastic tops get brittle and VERY easy to break (=new injector). Try cleaning with carb cleaner inside and out around the "O" rings, then soak wiht WD-40. Then grab the top and twist. I used my hands because anytime I grabbed the top with pliers or other implement I broke off more plastic. It looks like there's a special tool that can grab the injector in the side holes, but I've never found it. Perhaps an enterprising person could make one.
