Rear wheel bearing(s)... DIY?

Is this something I can do myself? The FSM is really thin on details.

I would should a PM to tavarish, from what he tells me it can be DIY, although it is a rather involved endeavor...are you certain that the bearings are shot, though?

No, I'm not entirely sure. I've just been getting a really strange groaning noise at times, and it occasionally resonates in the cabin. My tranny seems fine, axles wouldn't cause that kind of noise, and it doesn't sound like my one front wheel bearing did when it went on me a couple of months ago. If it does turn out to be a rear wheel bearing (or both of them), I just want to make sure I know what I'm getting into.

Your rear calipers might be seizing. Make sure it's not those first.

Just jack the car up and rotate the hub if you feel any resistance from the centre you will feel it. If the caliper is seizing you will feel the caliper grab the hub when you step off the brakes. So that will be a 2 person job. Get the other person to step on and off the brake or just pull on and release the park brake.

Check the wear patterns on your tires while you're at it. If you have feathering, that could create the noise as well. I got a constant groaning noise as soon as I put my 17's on (used tires).

rear wheel bearings are easy. They sell the whole hub assembly from nissan. It's kind of pricey (over 100 bux) but the bearings can't be replaced by themselves. But like I said, it's easy.

That being said... You probably do have caliper dragging. I had the same thing happen the wifes Maxi. I thought it was the bearing, had all the signs. Ordered it and replaced, but still made the noise. I took the caliper apart and regreased it and that fixed it. Now the other side is doing the same thing...

Good luck...

ebrake on calipers............a good way to check for wheel bearing is turn the wheel while holding the spring...if u feel excessive vibration its a wheel bearing

or shake your wheel up and down or side to side. if the bearing is bad enough youll get some play.
