Weird rustling/ruffling noise when I make turns...

Hi all,

When I make turns at low-mid speed - between maybe 20 mph to 40 mph, I hear a ruffling/rustling/rubbing noise - its really faint but I can still hear it. Now, my front tires are Yokohoma ES100 (225/55/16) on Enkei RS5 - they are crap and they are very very low tread (I will take a pic soon).

Another thing is that the sound is not consistent with speed, well not quite - the recurrance would speed up, but not linearly with the speed...

So - could that be a warning side from the tire that I REALLY should get new tires?

When did you notice this sound? Is the sound coming from 1 side or both? Roll up the windows and turn off the radio and listen real good to see if you can figure which side if you dont know.

Is the inside tire wall rubbing against the wheel well?

This was my first suspicion - when the wheel is all the way to one side, it's barely touching it - but I don't know about when it's only slightly turned.

It's not a metallic sound - more like "woosh woosh woosh" - clench your teeth, spread ur lips and push air through - thats the sound.

I cant really say but it could be the wheel bearing. But I do not know if the noise is coming from 1 side or both. Jack up the car. Wiggle the wheel around up and down. If there play in it you need a wheel bearing.

last ditch effort

edit: as I was driving to work today, I noticed that after the car warmed up (or more like drove about 3-4 miles), the sound dissapeared... bad tires is my main suspicion now...
