I am having a hard time locating the drain plug for my manual trans...does anyone have a picture of this??

 

it's a plug thats right beside the cross member. I think it's either 12 or 14 mm... I can never remember (I think it's 12). When you pull the plug tranny fluid will pour out and hit the cross member, then spread out so have a large drain pan ready. Despite what other users say, if you can get the drain plug loose just use it, and clean up the cross member with a rag when you are done.

 

it feels like it's gonna strip...any other suggestions?

 

well... there's that one sensor, i forget which one it is, but alot of people just drain it from there. lol. Someone here will be able to give you a better description of what to do. You might consider going out and buying some of those special wrenches to get out stripped nuts and bolts from sears. I got one of those. They work well. Just make sure you have a replacment bolt/plug on hand when you do it.

 

oh yes the gear selector sensor. what does it look like? Anyone have a picture??

 

It's the reverse light switch sensor that you can remove to drain the fluid if you don't feel like using the actual drain plug. That's on the driver's side and quite obvious, it's in plain view and is the only sensor on that side of the trans. Be careful taking it out though because the little ear that the bolt goes through is easy to break off.

 

yea take out the reverse switch and watch the tab.

 

I took out this tiny little plug from the driver's side, towards the front of the car. I'm not exactly sure what it was for, but i found a small compression spring and a ball bearing that fit perfectly into the end of the spring. Now I am almost certain that it was the 1st and 2nd gear detent pin. Guess I'll try to find the actual drain plug next time

 

The proper drain plug is directly below where the passenger side axle enters the transmission. The head is 12mm IIRC. It's almost covered by the shifter support bar.

it might. probably ought to purchase a new one.

What fluid should be used when refilling the tranny???

 

ive done it before. clean it up fine and superglue it. mine is still holding. the seal is held by the rubber o rings on it so it should not leak

use JB weld. It works for anything.

 

80w90...Valvoline Durablend is good.

 

I was doing the clutch in the max, and now after I put everthing back together the clutch goes all the way down to the floor and doesn't come back up?? Do I just have to bleed the system??

Also, the engine tries to turn over but wont start, could the system not being bled all the way be causing this???

 

yes. bleed the clutch. From both bleeders. Get a friend to help. alternate between the one up high and the one on the slave cylinder. and pump it a lot before you open the valves to build up pressure and blow out any air. just keep an eye on the reservoir.

 

GL4 fluid only.
Bleed the lower then the upper.
Dot 3 brake fluid.

 

Are you saying that the engine wont turn over if the clutch isn't bled correctly??

 

possible, but if your peddle isnt propely bled, dont try to start the car and drive, fix that first.

Bleed again. Bleed the lower (on the slave), then the upper. Test the peddle after you bleed the lower to make sure it wont fit on the floor.

 

if you're trying to start the car while it's in gear it definately won't turn over. I don't know about if it's in neutral though... but serioualy... bleed the clutch... now

 

I bled the clutch...that wasn't the problem. Car still won't turn over.

 

well the clutch not being bled properly wont make the car not start, but for driving the car you wont want a limp peddle.

what is the car doing that its not starting?

 

it tries to turn over...but just won't fire up

 

Car is getting full power?
no dim lights?
Strong cranks but no fire?

Try Tapping the starter while cranking to see if that works.
Is it getting fuel?
Is it getting spark?

Not so funny if you're on the receieving end

 

It's only a $20 part, so replacing it is entirely reasonable.

If only the tab is broken, get a fender washer (big washer) of the right size, and use that under the bolt to keep it all from comin gloose.
