obd2 SES light codes p1165 and p1131... Help!

my 00 gle has been throwing these two codes. the p1165 is "Swirl Control Valve Control Vacuum Check Switch" and the p1131 is "Swirl Control Solenoid Valve." along with these two codes, the message i receive on the scanner is "Manfacurer Contrl Fuel Air Metering"
if anyone has any information on what in the world this means and what i can do to get rid of these codes, please let me know, i will be forever grateful!
thanks a million in advance!

The swirl control system (you have a Cal. spec. car) is not operating properly or at least the ECM doesn't think that it is. I believe this may be covered by the Emissions Warranty and a dealer should be able to sort it out quickly. Did anybody just do any work around the top of the engine?

thank you for the response, i currently have 86k miles so im hoping that the emissions warranty still covers it. i replaced the MAF sensor a day or two ago but that code was coming up before that either way, changing the MAF sensor got rid of one of the codes but still p1165 and p1131 keep coming up. is there anyway to bypass this thing, to make the ECM "forget" the swirl control? just a thought. any and all input is appreciated!

You really need to verify if the swirl control is operating or not. If the swirl control does not "open" it seems to me that it could hurt performance due to the valves partially obstucting air flow in each runner and I know of no way to "fool" the ECM either. You could warm the car up and check that the actuator moves. The actuator is at the front right corner of the intake plenum just by the end of the front fuel rail. You should see the operating linkage and the lever. At idle and below 3200 rpm it should be in the closed position but at about 3600 it should move to the open position within about one second. The control solenoid (and the VIAS control solenoid) assembly is at the other end of the plenum by the fuel damper. The control vacuum check switch is located at the left side strut tower. Check to make sure all the vacuum hoses are hooked up and undamaged. I don't normally like to rev an unloaded engine, but you and a buddy could check that the actuator moves the linkage and lever as the engine is accelerated past 3600 rpm and that it moves the other way (closes) on deceleration back to idle. If it is actually operating then it would point to a vacuum check switch or circuit issue. DAMN..........Sorry, the rev test is complicated by the fact that the coolant temp. has to be above 50 deg. F and below 131 deg. F. This means you'll have to try it as the temp. gauge is climbing on "warmup" and it'll be guesswork. Below 50 and above 131 the swirl control is open.

It just hit me that there's another way to check the swirl control out. When you shut a "warm" engine down the swirl control should be open (coolant temp. is over 131). When you start a cold engine (coolant temp. under 50) the swirl control is open, then as it warms up and the coolant temp. gets over 60 (at idle) then the swirl control should go closed (and you should see the movement of the linkage/lever) until the coolant temp. goes above 131 when it will go open again. Note.........vacuum closes the swirl control and spring pressure (no vacuum) opens it.
